Biography

Dr. Igor Pioro – M.A.Sc. (1979), Ph.D. (1983), Doctor of Technical Sciences (1992), P.Eng. (2008) is an internationally recognized scientist in areas of nuclear engineering (thermalhydraulics of nuclear reactors, Generation IV nuclear reactor concepts); thermal sciences (boiling, forced convection including supercritical pressures); and heat engineering (two-phase thermosyphons, heat exchangers, heat-recovery systems).

He is an author/co-author of 7 state-of-the-art technical books, 140 papers, 26 inventions, and more than 30 major technical reports. His latest monograph is: Pioro, I.L. and Duffey, R.B., Heat Transfer and Hydraulic Resistance at Supercritical Pressures in Power Engineering Applications, ASME Press, New York, NY, USA, 2007, 328 pages.

Dr. Pioro graduated from the National Technical University of Ukraine "Kiev Polytechnical Institute", Heat Engineering Department with Master of Science in Thermal Physics (Diploma of Honour) in 1979. After that he worked on various positions including an engineer, part-time professor, senior scientist, deputy director. He was associated with the Institute of Engineering Thermal Physics National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine for 13 years and with the University of Ottawa for 8 years. After that he worked as a senior scientist in the Thermalhydraulics Branch at Chalk River Laboratories, Atomic Energy of Canada Limited for 7 years. Currently, Dr. Igor Pioro is an Associate Professor and Director of Graduate Program at the Faculty of Energy Systems and Nuclear Science University of Ontario Institute of Technology. He is also a member of the Executive Committee of the Nuclear Engineering Division of ASME, member of ANS and Associate Editor of the ASME Journal of Engineering for Gas Turbines & Power.

In 2008, one of his books (Bezrodny, M.K., Pioro, I.L. and Kostyuk, T.O. “Transfer Processes in Two-Phase Thermosyphon Systems. Theory and Practice”, 2005, 2nd ed., Augmented and Revised, Fact Publ. House, Kiev, Ukraine, 704 pages (in Russian)) was awarded the First Prize from the National Technical University of Ukraine “KPI” as the best technical book of 2007 published by “KPI” professors.

Dr. Igor Pioro was awarded with certificates of Appreciation from the ASME Nuclear Engineering Division for valued services as Chair of Steering Committee, Technical Program Chair, Keynote Speaker and Track Leader for ICONEs in 2009, 2008, 2007, 2006 and 2005. In 1990 Dr. Pioro was awarded with the Medal of the Ukrainian Academy of Sciences for the best scientific work of a young scientist and with the Badge "Inventor of the USSR".
