IEEE Toronto 2004 Annual General Meeting and Awards Dinner
This annual event is an opportunity for IEEE Toronto Section members to
meet each other as well as the dedicated group of IEEE volunteers who
give of their time to plan, organize and execute the wide range of
programs offered within the Section and elsewhere in Canada. Invited
guests typically include volunteer leaders from neibouring Sections and
IEEE Canada. The Section Chair reports on the past year's activities and
presents a variety of awards and recognitions.

Guest Speaker: Brian O'Connell, president
of the IEEE Society on Social Implications of Technology. Brian
is an associate professor in the Department of Computer Science and the
Department of Philosophy at Central Connecticut State University in New
Britain. He teaches courses concerned with the ethical, legal and
social aspects of computing and with the jurisprudence of new
technologies. His presentation is entitled - "Keeping the Gloves Off".

Findlay and past Section Chair Bob Hanna.
Kostas Plataniotis presents past Section Chair Bob Hanna with a certificate of
appreciation for his outstanding leadership as Section Chair (2002-03),
especially in planning and executing the Centennial celebrations in October
2003.
Ed Lovrek, Engineering & Human Environment Chapter Vice Chair,
introduces guest speaker Brian O'Connell, the current president of the IEEE
Society on Social Implications of Technology.

Walter Zessner, founding chair (1993) of our Engineering & Human
Environment Chapter is retiring this year as Chapter Chair. His extraordinary
service is being recognized by both the IEEE Society on Social Implications of
Technology and the Toronto Section by the presentation of certificates of
appreciation (the Toronto certificate was presented on April 15 at a Section
Executive meeting) and a plaque.
The Toronto Communications Chapter, is the recipient of the
2004 IEEE Communications Society Chapter Achievement Award.

Kostas Plataniotis also announced two Section Achievement awards that will be
presented at a future Section executive meeting;

Emanuel Istrate is the recepient of the 2004 "IEEE Toronto Section Chapter
Chair of the Year" award,

George Eleftheriades is the recepient of the 2004 "IEEE Toronto Section
Engineer of the Year" award "for pioneering contributions to the theory and
applications of Metamaterials".

companion) is $75 per person.
