IEEE Toronto Section Executive Committee Biographies
The operation of the IEEE Toronto Section is managed by the Section Executive committee, whose members are elected or appointed every two years. On each of these pages, we introduce a member of the committee who volunteers his or her time and energy to deliver the services that the IEEE Toronto Section provides. On your behalf, we recognize their invaluable contributions.

Marcelo Mota, SM IEEE - Section Secretary

Marcelo Mota holds a Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering from the Federal University of Bahia, Brazil, and a Master degree in Business Administration from the University of Warwick, England. He has joined the Greater Toronto Airports Authority since 2001 and is currently General Manager of the IT Program Management Department, responsible for the delivery of IT infrastructure expansion and application development projects. Marcelo has a total of 27 years of experience in the IT, Energy, Government, and Consulting industry. Before moving to Canada, he was the Director of Business Development and Operations & Technical Support of a provincial information technology company. Prior to this, Marcelo spent 17 years in a large hydro company holding the positions of General Manager of the IT Department, Head of the Corporate Strategic Planning Division, General Manager of the Tenders & Contracts Department, Regional Manager of the Metropolitan Area, and Head of a number of Engineering Divisions. He is also a Project Management Professional (PMP) certified by the Project Management Institute (PMI).

Marcelo is a Senior Member of IEEE since 2000 and has been actively involved with the institute for 19 years. He served as Chair of the Transnational Committee of the IEEE's Educational Activities Board (1997 and 1998) and Member of the IEEE Educational Activities Board, Regional Activities Board, and Publication Activities Board (1997). He was Chair (1994-95) and Vice-Chair (1992-93) of the IEEE's Bahia Section. Marcelo is also a former Associate Editor of the IEEE Globalization Newsletter and former Editor of the IEEE Latin America Newsletter. He is a recipient of the IEEE 2000 Third Millennium Medal for remarkable volunteer services.

Marcelo has actively participated in various leadership roles in other professional associations. He was Coordinator of the Science & Technology Committee (1993-94) and Vice-Treasurer (1998) of the Partners of America - Bahia/Pennsylvania, Member of the Consultative Board of the Bahia Engineering Club (1993-95), and Deputy Councilor of the Bahia State Regional Council of Engineering, Architecture and Agronomy (1994).

He is the author of a number of articles and technical papers published by local, national and international seminars (e.g. "Electricity Consumption Profile of Slum Areas in a Metropolitan Region", "New Concepts of Expenditure and Investment as Modifiers of Fixed Assets' Value - The Effects of Decree DNAEE 036/83" and "Corporate Strategic Planning and the Transition to Total Quality Management in a Power Utility"). Marcelo has also lectured, conducted training, and taught seminars on Equipment Technology, Risk Control for Electricians, Accounting Control, and Budget Planning.
