One Day USB Hands-On in Linux
USB has emerged as the de-facto standard interface for PC connectivity. Unfortunately for developers, the USB programming model is relatively complex, compared to these traditional interfaces. The objective of this 1-day class is to de-mystify the USB, and kick-start your USB Device development in Linux by reviewing the important aspects of the USB, as well as getting some hands-on experience in implementing generic data exchange between a Microchip PIC18 USB MCU and a Linux user-space program.

Section News
IEEE Toronto Section is on Facebook

April 7th 2008 - As many of you may know by now, Facebook has become an international phenomenon. - It's one of the most popular social networking sites on the Internet. Members may create personal profiles and add friends and colleagues to their "Friends List", which allows them to view each other's personal profiles. In addition to this, through this medium, it is possible to send messages to one another, create events (and invite whoever you please), create groups and more.
There are millions of users from all around the world on Facebook and it has become one of the most important tools for advertising events, both social and technical in nature. As a result, in the Toronto Section, my GOLD group has created a Facebook Group "IEEE GOLD - Toronto Section". There is almost 100 members - both IEEE and non-IEEE members, and not only from Toronto.
Through this Facebook Group, GOLD sends messages to all the members of our upcoming events, and we maintain a list of the upcoming events in the "Recent News" section. We also have pictures of our past events, a "Wall" for blog-type discussions, links to our homepage and more.
The "IEEE GOLD - Toronto Section" Facebook group has been very well-received by its members. It promotes interactivity and also gives us another way of getting IEEE GOLD's message out there. Due to the positive response received, I strongly recommend other Affinity Groups, Chapters and Sections to create their own groups. It requires little maintenance and is a fun way to keep in contact with your members.
IEEE is coming out with its own social networking tool. It's called "MemberNet". If you log onto myIEEE with your web account info, you will see it there. It's still in its Beta version, but you can easily sign up - I believe it will be fully functional very soon (within a month). You can easily search other IEEE members and maintain a profile. It's similar to "Linked In".
