The Panel Sessions have been organised by Jorge Pereira and will all take place in the Blenheim Room: |
Panel Session 1: "Fourth Generation mobile systems" Time: Tuesday 19th September - 14.15 to 16.00 Second generation mobile radio systems have been deployed successfully worldwide. These systems are evolved to higher data rates and packet transmission. Third generation mobile radio systems are currently being standardized worldwide to be initially deployed in 2001 and 2002 in different regions of the world. New advanced multimedia services are under development and first services are already being offered in second generation systems via GPRS, HSCSD and EDGE, which will provide new business opportunities for all players in the mobile business. The liberalization and privatization of communication services changed the role models and value chains of content and service providers, core network and access network providers. The major business will move from the transport of data to the content. Due to the megatrend of the rapid growth of Internet type services packet oriented traffic is exceeding circuit switched traffic. Therefore, communication systems will be developed and optimized for packed oriented traffic. Mobile Internet will be a dominant application for future mobile communication systems. The first definition of a vision of third generation systems started around 1990 before the initial deployment of second generation systems. Therefore, already today the discussion is starting on the development of systems beyond third generation mobile radio systems due to the long time frame for system specification and international standardization. These discussions have to be started early enough with respect to the necessary identification of new spectrum and the development of new technologies. Operators as well as manufacturers have to prepare themselves for these new developments. Recently, first activities started in different organizations and research projects - e.g. within the 5th Framework Program of the European Commission - to create a vision on systems beyond third generation. However, today there is no clear agreed vision available on such systems. This panel discussion will address

Panel Session 2: "Interactive Access to Content" Time: Tuesday 19th September - 16.30 to 18.15 The complementarity of Telecommunications and Broadcasting has come to the forefront in the recent past, with concrete experiments and a great focus on the delivery of IP traffic to mobile users, in an integrated form, via the most appropriate bearer, depending on application and agreed QoS. Issues like interactivity, personalisation, mobile delivery, transcoding, multi-streaming, evolving value chains, content provision and packaging, smart agents/filters, will be discussed. Confirmed Panelists

Panel Session 3: " mCommerce and Location-based VAS" Time: Wednesday 20th of September - 11.00 to 12.45 The growing importance of eCommerce on the move (hence mCommerce), making the best use of user location information, is seen as one of the killer applications for current and future generations. The potential and constraints of mCommerce, the associated security and privacy issues, and the underlying value chains will be discussed. Location-based VAS will be analysed in the perspective of current (US) and planned (Europe) mandates to locate mobile devices. Confirmed Panelists

Panel Session 4: "Towards an all IP-based wireless network" Time: Wednesday 20th of September - 14.15 to 16.00 The next generation wireless systems are moving toward all IP-based networks. Many challenges need to be overcome and resolved in order to provide integrated data & voice services with reasonable quality of services in these networks. In this session, representatives from EGPRS, CDMA2000 and WCDMA communities, including vendors and service providers will present their views on approaches/plans on evolving the 2nd generation systems to the next generation all-IP based networks. Confirmed Panelists

Panel Session 5: "Reconfigurable Radio Systems and Networks Beyond Software Radio" Time: Thursday 21st of September - 11.00 to 12.45 The need for commercially viable multi-mode/multi-band terminals, together with the enormous advantage of reconfigurability at the network level have been driving the intense interest in this area of research. The panel will discuss issues ranging from enabling technologies to software download, from base band to RF to smart antennas, from personalisation to process instantiation in the network, from terminal reconfiguration to VAS creation and provisioning. Confirmed Panelists

Panel Session 6: "Broadband Wireless Access: from Office to Home" Time: Thursday 21st of September - 14.15 to 16.00 This panel addresses the current status of the broadband wireless
standards for access and distribution of emerging Panelists:
