Result of Selection of the 2009 R10 GOLD Award

Dear R10 Committee Members,

This is to announce the result of selection of the 2009 R10 GOLD Award.

It is very unfortunate but no R10 GOLD Award will be presented this year.

We received one nomination but judged the nomination is not sufficiently qualified for the award in the review by the 2009 R10 Awards & Recognition Committee.

Thank you for your interest and nomination.

We hope we will be able to present this award next year.

With best regards,

Takatoshi Minami

[Article] IEEE Global History Network Grows in First Year

Dear R10 Section & Council Chairs,

The IEEE Global History Network (GHN) is growing significantly in the first year!

“The GHN is designed to reach the global public and directly engage IEEE members and others with a stake in technological innovation. It allows users to discuss current activities in technology-as well as what will happen in the future-while linking to history.”

Please kindly take a few minutes to read the attached article “IEEE Global History Network Grows in First Year.

This article has outlined the initial success of IEEE GHN and highlighted the accomplishments of GHN in the first year. You will find many exciting features of IEEE GHN coming along the way from the article!

The IEEE GHN serves as a platform for the OUs to input their historical content.

With the integration of myIEEE and IEEE GHN, the section are encouraged to contribute historical information to their local section history portal as very soon members will be able to access the historical content from myIEEE and receive historical information about the section. This will definitely help the new members to have a better view of how the section is growing and acknowledge a “job well done” from the past section committee!

Hope you enjoy reading the article! :)

Thank you for volunteering your time and your continually efforts to IEEE GHN.

Best Regards,

Ewell Tan

Special offer on E-book “The Best of Backscatter from IEEE-USA Today's Engineers”

For a limited time only — July 23 through August 21, IEEE-USA E-Books is offering the new second volume of “The Best of Backscatter from IEEE-USA Today's Engineer -- Volume 2” for only 99 cents to IEEE Members.

Author Donald Christiansen wrote the essays that were first published as columns in “IEEE-USA Today's Engineer Online” and the print “IEEE-USA Today's Engineer Digest.” Written in an Andy Rooney type style, this collection of essays is fun, humorous and thought-provoking.

About his essays, Christiansen wrote that his reward is in the feedback he gets from readers – “often extensions of an argument, sometimes disagreements, occasional compliments. It's disappointing to write something and get no feedback.”

Christiansen is a former editor and publisher of “IEEE Spectrum,” an independent consultant, and a Fellow of the IEEE. He has written hundreds of essays, articles, editorials and columns over the years related to the engineering profession.

Topics in this second volume include: All in a Day's Work; Black on Black Design; Picking a Winner; The Hat Trick: Having It Both Ways; Credit Where Due; Ephemera for Engineers and Scientists; The Collyers and The Web; About the MBA; Getting on Prime Time – Mission Impossible?; Irreconcilable Differences?; Engineers – Mere Mercenaries?; and Ghosts.

You can purchase your copy of "The Best of Backscatter from IEEE-USA Today's Engineer - Volume 2" at www.ieeeusa.org/communications/ebooks for the special IEEE Member Price of 99 cents(Nonmember Price is $19.95) until 21 August. After 21 August, the IEEE Member Price will be $9.95, and the Non-Member price will remain the same at $19.95.
