ORGANISATIONAL ACTIVITIES
B.1 Membership Development Programmes
The Section E-newsletter is one of the
essential membership development efforts since it also goes out to the members
in Arrears to inform them about activities and encourage them to renew their
membership.
Additionally there were talks to
colleges to induct new members and create interest in IEEE, for this we had the
assistance of Life Members group in a big way.
Membership numbers remained fairly
stable year on year and especially the students kept their membership intact,
as of Dec 2005.
While Bombay
Section still leads in overall membership of India Council a lot has to be
achieved.
B.2 PROFESSIONAL AND EDUCATIONAL
1. Technical
Programs
A large
number of events were held throughout the calendar year 2005, comprising
technical talks, workshops, symposia and conferences, across the Bombay Section
(that now comprises two subsections of Madhya Pradesh - formed in 2002, and
Pune - formed in mid-2003). Some IEEE Distinguished Lecturers from overseas
visited Bombay and Pune, and shared their expertise through expert lectures.
2. Sub -
Section Activities
Today, our
two Sub-sections - Pune with a complement of 1100+ members and MP with 300+
members
provides a strong base for expanding the Student and Chapter activities at the
local level within the expanse of the Bombay Section. In particular the Pune
activities of outreach to rural areas for spreading awareness of modern
technology is notable.
3. Chapter
Activities
Bombay
Section comprises 5 chapters, inclusive of two joint chapters, which have
conducted various activities in their sphere.
A new
society chapter has been approved by Headquarters this year, namely,
Instrumentation and Measurement society chapter. Prof S D Agashe of PIET who
had taken a lead in this activity is the Chair.
While all
chapters have been active, in particular, the Communications Society Chapter
and the joint Chapter of Antennas and Propagation Society and the Electron Devices
Chapter have been very active this year in organizing technical talks and
seminars for the Section. The IAS/PES has taken the initiative of rural
awareness of technology and the IT Seminar organized by the EMS Chapter was
very well received, especially for the breadth of expertise of the faculty.
4. Student
Activities
Bombay
Section now has 75 student branches, second in the world only to Madras
Section.
In August
2005, the India Council All India Student Congress was held at PICT Pune. It
was
organized by
Bombay Section and hosted by the PICT team. Almost 100 students participated
from five Sections across India. The entire activity was well planned and
conducted in very professional way. The team of students led by Prof.Rajesh
Ingle and Dr.D J Doke put on an excellent show.
Vivekananda
Education Society Institute of Tech., ( VESIT) Chembur, was declared as the
winner of the IEEE worldwide Website contest. Thadomal Shahani College, which
had also qualified earlier by having stood second in the R10 was placed as one
of the ten runners up in the International finals. Several Student Branches
were active through the year, with organisation of Industrial visits and
holding of technical events. To foster student participation, Student Counselor
meets were organized by our Student Activities Chair in Bombay and other
centres.
At the
Annual IEEE Bombay Section Prof K Shankar Student Paper and Project contest
earlier in March 2005, a number of papers & projects of high quality were
received.
5. EXECOM
Meetings
The
Executive Committee of the Bombay Section held 10 meetings during the year to
transact various items of business. Some meetings were also held at Pune.
6. CHAPTERS
On March 10 & 11, 2005, Two day seminar on
“IT - The Change Agent” at Hotel Taj
President,
organized by Bombay Chapter of Engineering Management Society which
featured
presentations
on IT in the Finance and Banking, Rural, Government and Social sectors.
The IAS PES
Chapter has been very active in collaboration with IEEMA, Institute of
Electrical Engg and Manufacturers Association and has several programmes for
updating skills of electrical engineers and sharing the benefits of technology
Also the
IAS/PES have an excellent outreach
programme for rural schools sharing with students the new technologies like
mobile communications and satellite technology.

8. NEWSLETTER
The E-Newsletter of Bombay Section goes
out to more than 1500 individuals, excl students and has gone a great way in
bringing awareness of members to the numerous talks by distinguished visitors
and other technical events, sometimes even at very short notice.
News of Senior member elevation and
other membership matters take prime place in the letter.
A section of interest to members is
Gleanings from IEEE and elsewhere. We
take up interesting tidbits from "What's New.." series and highlight
them to members besides sharing other items of interest.
There is a plan to revive the printed
newsletter in the coming year.
9.
GOALS AND PLANS
It is the Goal of the Section to
include as many corporate members as possible since it is they who would be the
mainstay of the section. For this plans
are being made to meet up with important companies through existing members and
foster interest and membership in IEEE.
Student membership is always a
challenge, and it is heartening to note that the Life members have risen to the
challenge.
There is also a plan to increase Senior
Membership in the Section through the Jamboree approach calling candidates for
a common event and having referees doing the recommendations on the spot.
10.
OTHERS
There is a close relationship with
National Societies like the Institution of Electronics and Telecom Engineers
(India) with whom we have a MOU.
• Seminar
jointly organized by IETE and other technical bodies on the occasion of “World
Telecom Day”
on 17 May 2005 held at Western Railway Head quarters.
