IEEE – HK Section Report 2005

PART  A  -  SECTION SUMMARY

    A.1  Executive Summary

IEEE -  Hong Kong Section is a very well organized geographical unit in IEEE Region 10. With a total number of 14 chapters and two affinity groups, our volunteers continue to provide services as well as organize technical activities for our members. In 2005, The Section and Chapters have organized/co-organized 15 major Workshop/ Conference/ Symposium (as listed in table of Section B6 below) and over 50 seminars and technical visits and these events are very well received by our members. The outstanding achievement has actually recognized by the IEEE Society and the Joint Chapter of CAS/COM and Joint Chapter of IAS/PES/PELS/IES are given the best Chapter Award.

Mainland China is one of the most important countries for IEEE strategic development. The Region 10 Director Dr. Seiichi Takeuchi and his Executive Officers taken a tour visit China to foster closer link with Section and Sub-sections in China. He has also visited our Section in this tour and brief his vision of the development in Region 10. Our neighbor city Macau also established her own Section in 2004 and we were invited to visit them in June of 2005 in order to share our experience in section operation with them. We have also agreed to share information about the latest activities through our E-newsletter. In particular, we also invite them to jointly support the TENCON 2006 which will be held in Hong Kong in November 2006.

A.2  Financial Report

The financial position maintain healthy and the total income of 2005 was HK$159,895.81 of which 80% was from the IEEE HQ rebate and the remaining was from the contribution of the Affinity VISA Card Program, interest and advertisement. The total expense of 2005 was HK$125,047.54 and of which 57% went to support student activities, including financial subsidy to Student Branches, award of prizes to winners of Student Paper Contest, and recipients of student prizes via relevant local Universities. Finally we had a surplus of HK$34,848.27 in 2005.

The Hong Kong Section has grown to a relative large organization and the Executive Committee has decided to regulate the operational management. In particular the accounting system is required to be re-organized in order to comply with the local law. This, although, is transparent to members, it is important for Section’s management. A task force has also established for this purpose.

PART  B  -  ORGANIZATIONAL ACTIVITIES

    B.1 Membership Development Programs

In 2005, the GOLD of HK Section is very active, they organized many activities and could attract new graduates from university to join them.

B.2 Professional and Continuing Education Activities

The list of activities is in Section B6 below.

    B.3 Students Activities

Recognizing the importance of arising the visibility of IEEE to the students studying in electrical/electronics/computer related disciplines, Section not only financially supports the 5 active student branches to organize activities, but also organize paper contest to let young talents to demonstrate their achievement. The winning papers have been submitted to the R10 Student Paper Contest. In 2005, we have won a 1st Prize and we congratulate Mr. Zeng Jia for his outstanding achievement.

B.4  E-mail and Newsletter Activities, Home Page

The HK Section uses extensively its Web Page (http://www.ieee.org.hk) to communicate effectively with its members. Most and the Chapters also have their own Web Pages. IN 2005, the HK Section published 11 issues of electronic Newsletter to members via email, and 1 hard print Newsletter to members via postal services.

Following the deployment of the Section’s web-server, most of the information dissemination and units’ operations can be done more easily. In order to maintain a high quality web service to our Chapters and members, we have established a task force to constantly upgrade and refine the system in order to provide quality services.
