PART B –
ORGANIZATIONAL ACTIVITIES.
B.1 Membership
Development Programs:
The EXECOM members always take utmost care to increase the membership strength. In 2005 the increase was by 69. During the outreach programs taken by the Section, attempts are always made to increase the no. of members. In addition several special membership drive programs are taken by the Section. The evidence of retention of members to the maximum possible extent , could be obtained from the roaster. The GOLD Affinity Group of the Section is very active and they organize several Technical Activities through out the year. In July 2006 the GOLD Group would act as one of the Sponsors for the National Conference RETIS 2006.
B.2
Professional and Continuing Education Activities:
The Section organized 7 Technical Lectures delivered by eminent Engineers/Professors in 2005 in addition to the programs activated by Seven Chapters and One Affinity Group. In the CALCON’05 Program as reported above there were 13 Invited Lectures. The Section is highly desirous of conducting Special Training Programs in 2006.
B.3 Student Activities:
New Student Branches were opened at NIST,
Berhampur, Orissa and
Heritage Institute
of Technology, Kolkata,
B.4
e-mail and Newsletter Activities, Home Page:
The Section regularly published its newsletter “Monitor ”. Due to some reasons beyond our control, the issues could not be published in 2005.However, in 2006 attempts have already been undertaken to publish “ Monitor” immediately to highlight the activities of 2005/2006. The
“ Monitor” acts as
one of the effective means of communication between the Section and its large
no. of members, around 1300.
The Section has its website www. ewh.ieee.org/r10/calcutta . Special attempts have already been taken to update its content and also to make it very attractive. Links would be made to its Chapters/Affinity Group.
B.5 Awards:
Prof. Sivaji Chakravorti and Prof. Chandan Kumar
Sarkar have been
awarded as Distinguished Lecturers of IEEE.
COMSOC Chapter received “ Outstanding Chapter
Award ” as Second Best Chapter in Asia-Pacific Region 10 during
2005.
PE Chapter received
“ High Performance Chapter Award ” in 2005.
Prof. Nikhil Ranjan Pal has become the Fellow of IEEE.
B.6 Chapter Activities:
All the Chapters of the Section namely
AP-MTT, Computer, COMSOC, EDS, IA, LEOS
& PE are very active while some of them are really outstanding. They
organize several Technical Lectures/Conferences throughout the year, sometimes
collaborating with local professional societies/educational Institutes.
PART C – GOALS AND PLANS.
C.1 Goals:
·
To
increase the no. of Senior Members &
Members
·
To
increase the no. of Student Branches
·
To
starts up Training Courses in the state-of-the-art technologies
·
To
revamp the news letter & website
·
To
increase outreach programs outside the city of
C.2 Implementation Plans:
·
Frequent
visit to Industries/Academic Institutes to identify potential members qualified
for up-gradation to Senior Grade & also
to identify persons eligible to become member. Once identification is
over, serious persuasion to be made to become the Senior Member/Member.
·
Frequent
visit to Academic Institutes to start up new Student Branches to catch the
benefit of IEEE. The close interaction
created by such visit with the students would increase the no. of Student
members.
·
To
identify the needs of the students in the various Engineering
Colleges/Universities and to start up the Training Courses. By organizing such
Training Courses it is possible to attract and motivate the students to join
IEEE
·
Once
the activities are increased, the contents of the Newsletter and Website would
be more and more current and be very useful to the members.
·
The
IEEE activities are mainly centered about the city of
PART
D – OTHERS.
D.1 Relationship with National Societies:
The Section always works
hand-in-hand with National Societies like The Institution of Engineers (
D.2 Special Events:
The Section wants
to start-up Training Courses in the areas like VHDL learning, FPGA implementation,
Digital Signal Processor etc. depending on the need exercised by the students.
D.3 Concern areas and suggestions:
·
To
attract the students an initial start-up fund of $ 200 ( one-time) must be
given to the concerned Student Branch immediately after the formation to
organize Student Activities which in turn provide more Student members.
·
Since
many colleges have dearth of Teaching
Faculty , particularly in the upcoming areas, Training Courses conducted by
IEEE in these areas would provide academic benefit to the students and also to
the Teachers. This activity would also boost the no. of members. To start-up
such courses some special funds must be provided by Region 10 Committee. It is
to be noted that there are institutes located at very remote places where such
kind of Training Course is extremely necessary to upgrade the level of
Technical Knowledge.
