Appendix - Glossary

Brainstorming
An interactive mix or reinforced exchange of ideas. A brainstorming session may include a combination of "random" ideas that are offered at will to answer a need, along with reinforced ideas that are "bounced off" other attendees and offered back with the other attendees' modifications and additions. To facilitate the collection and mesh of ideas, the initial idea exchange part of a brainstorming session would more often be held in "synchronous" mode with all attendees taking advantage of the short delay between offered ideas and counter-offered answers and suggestions. The second, or prioritizing, segment of the meeting may take place either in a continued synchronous mode or in an asynchronous mode. The choice between modes would be made by the facilitator; the workload of providing immediate vote synopses or lists versus an off-line tally that could be assembled after the initial meeting and voted on by the attendees (and perhaps others) once all have had a chance to reflect on the ideas offered. Other variations may be made in brainstorming whereas all segments of the meeting are held in asynchronous mode. In this case, the rules and procedures of asynchronous meetings would be followed.
