They are: Industrial Applications Society, Computer Society, Communications Society, Engineering Management Society and Power Engineering Society. A mass mailing via US Mail during September was made to allow members to update their email or U.S. Mail address information. The mailing also provided a choice for members to receive the monthly section newsletter "Significant Bits" by email and provided the section website address. The monthly newsletter is sent out as email unless members request a printed copy. IEEE Alabama Section is sponsoring a pilot program that involves the University of Alabama (located in Tuscaloosa, AL) developing a partnership with Hoover High School of (Hoover, Al) that will result in an Engineering Academy providing Adjunct Faculty appointments for Academy Faculty from the University. The program began in August 2004. The first class includes 42 students. The purpose of the Academy is to identify exceptional students in mathematics and science and to provide these students with the foundation for a life-long career in engineering. The goal of the four-year program is to provide enrollees with the opportunity to obtain the highest level of high school diploma provided in the State of Alabama and to jointly complete approximately 20% of an ABET-accredited degree program by ABET. The Alabama Section is proud to support this new program for high school students. The November meeting will feature a Senior member recruiting session. Members with qualifications to advance to Senior member will have the opportunity to submit their application forms at the meeting and existing Senior members will meet with them to endorse the applications and submit them by the 15 November dead-line. Student branches supported by Alabama Section are: Auburn University, University of Alabama, University of Alabama at Birmingham, Tuskegee University and Gadsden State Community College. A student night is held each year during the Spring. Professional Activities in the Section continue to include participation with the Engineering Council of Birmingham and the Joint Engineers Council of Alabama. M. Stephen Daniel, P.E.
