Area 8 Report to the IEEE Region 3 Executive Committee, March 9, 2007 The three section of Area 8 are busy with IEEE activities and in contributing to their communities. Reports from the individual sections follow. Evansville-Owensboro Section Chair Paul Kuban reports that this section's major accomplishments for 2006 were: a successful tour of the AEP Rockport Generating Station; continued support of the University of Southern Indiana (USI) and University of Evansville (UE) engineering programs and students; an excellent presentation by new arrival, Steve Lapidus, on the electrification of Buffalo, NY; a new Vice-Chair (Steve Lapidus) elected in November; a decision to honor two students from each of USI and UE with a plaque and gift certificate for excellence in EE studies; completion of all reports prior to the due date (perhaps a first for the section!). Lexington Section Chair Jerry Goerz reports that the Lexington Section currently has about 426 members. The section officers for 2007 are: Jerry Goerz, Chair; Stuart Talbert, Vice-Chair; Ray Williams, Treasurer; Don Hill, Treasurer, PACE Chair, and Membership Development Chair; Elwood West, Awards Chair; Jeremy Byrd, GOLD Affinity Group Chair; and Regina Hannemann, Past Chair. The Lexington Section held 7 technical meetings, 2 administrative meetings, and 1 social meeting in 2006. The technical meetings included:"Lead-Free Electronics and the eRoHS Directive" by John Barnes; a tour of the University of Kentucky Visualization Center, led by Senching Cheung; "Residential Solar Energy" by Jerry Goerz; "Pico Satellites" by Jerry Goerz; a line-following robot competition by UK engineering students; a tour of Rupp Arena's physical plant, HVAC, lighting, sound, floor ice-making, and radio and television broadcast facilities, led by Merrill Richardson; and a tour of Morehead State University's Radio Telescope, led by Jeff Kruth. The social meeting was an annual December joint meeting with the Louisville Section, and included a semi-technical presentation about inventing toys, by Dmitry Strakovsky. The Lexington Section also staffed a display at the University of Kentucky's Engineers' Day open house, and gave away about 100 demonstration motor kits to pre-college students. So far in 2007, the Lexington Section has held one social meeting and one technical meeting. The social meeting in January featured recollections of the funniest, stupidest, and most outrageous engineering stories. The technical meeting in February was an engineering student paper contest Jeremy Byrd has volunteered to be the Lexington Section's first GOLD (Graduates of the Last Decade) Affinity Group Chair. Louisville Section Chair Jeffrey A. Haeberlin reports that the section's accomplishments include: gaining a new IEEE Fellow in the Louisville Section, Dr. Amir Amini, Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Louisville, with a research focus on bio-medical imaging; forming a Life Affinity Group by members of the section last year; getting a new IEEE-hosted Section web-site up and running last year (http://www.ieee.org/louisville ). The Section has taken several actions to support professional engineering activity in the Louisville area: sponsorship of a Service Award and a table at the Kentucky Society of Professional Engineers banquet; sponsorship of a Special Award and providing a judge for the Louisville Regional Science Fair; and support of the University of Louisville Engineering School E-Expo. The section plans a Senior Member Drive in 2007. John M. Parr, Ph.D. Professor, Electrical Engineering University of Evansville
