4-13-05 Draft Minutes Strategic Planning Committee (SPC) Ft. Lauderdale, FL 7:30 pm 8 April 2005 Attendees: J.Beall, D.Conner, R.Duggan (chair), R.Harris, D.McLaren, W.Ratcliff, R.Riddle (v-chair). Visitors: D.Green, C.Jankowski (IEEE RA Staff), S. Waselik (IEEE IT Staff) 1. Chair R.Duggan welcomed attendees. 2. Minutes of 15 October 2004 were approved. 3. Duggan reviewed minor changes made in the 12-1-04 Strategic Plan 2005+ and led a discussion about the frequency of changes to the Strategic Plan. Several suggestions made included: o Revise the SP every two years in accord with the Director's term, since the plan is not an operational plan. o Delete the year (e.g. 2005+) from the Plan title. Just give the date of the latest revision a la ByLaws and Operations Manual. o List of SPC members should use formal names. 4. Dick Riddle, LDO project director, reviewed the status of the LDO initiative and the participation on 4/8. 5. Duggan stressed the need for mentor involvement with their respective committees, encouraging preparation of their G&Os in accord with the SPC Strat Plan. (This was also stressed during the subsequent R3 meeting). 6. Duggan reviewed progress toward the 2005 SPC Goals and Objectives. Challenges faced in the History compilation were discussed. Several R3 initiatives are based upon recommendations from the SP retreat in 8/04. Need for R3 History update was pointed out. An SPC e-conference will be scheduled later in 2005. 7. Roy Harris discussed thoughts from the ByLaws/OpsManual review relative to committees and voting. He agreed to summarize the conclusions and distribute them to the SPC. 8. A discussion was held re getting more nominees for the several awards of recognition. A pool of possible candidates should be available from those not previously selected. This suggestion will be passed to ARC Chair Twitchell. Since ARC could use some assistance, it was suggested that GOLD members might be a source of volunteers. 9. Dave McLaren and Cecelia Jankowski discussed the change of Life Member chapters to "affinity groups" a la Women in Engineering groups. Reg 3 has perhaps 4000 life members -- a fertile field for groups. 10. Duggan will publicize later the schedule for the next face-to-face SPC meeting, as the schedule for the Sections Congress in Tampa in October will be rather tight. 11. The meeting was adjourned at 9:30 pm. R.S.Duggan, SPC Chair
