2004/05 IEEE REGION 5

STRATEGIC PLAN

 

Vision

 

Region 5 shall be an organization in which all electro and information technology professionals feel that they should be participating members and that all industries, government, and academia support IEEE as organizations and want their technical professionals to be active members

 

Mission

 

To enrich the experience of IEEE members in Region 5 with quality programs, career and skill development opportunities, information on IEEE services, and recognition to allow members to get the most from their IEEE membership.  To participate in the community at large and interact with industry, government, and academia .

 

Region 5 Goals for 2004/05

 

1.       Provide regular, quality local programs

a)      Increase number of local technical programs

b)      Support and develop Section/Society partnerships. 

c)      Investigate/develop local applications-oriented technical meetings

d)      Support career & professional development meetings.

e)      Promote continuing education opportunities (CEU/PDH).

 

Measure: Increased number of local programs, of distinguished visitor lecturers, of chapter membership, of chapters, and increase in Region 5 retention rate compared to other regions.

 

REGION EXCOM ACTION PLANS:

·        (d) Develop and disseminate professional development/career development presentations (canned, plug & play) for use in local units. Support Sections and Student Branches in providing these programs to their members.

·        (a & b) Develop processes for inter-Section programs: joint Section programs, shared speaker tours, Region speakers bureau, share program ideas & export presentation contents. Promote these programs to Sections.

·        (a & b) Encourage and facilitate inter-society programs: joint programs with other professional organizations

·        (a, b, d & e) Share program ideas (PACE: Dave Pierce, Other: Bob Scolli)

·        (a, d & e) Investigate existing IEEE programs (TAB Colloquia, distinguished lecture series, etc.) to determine if applicable to Region 5 to support Section/Chapter programming (3 Ds)

·        (d) Provide sections with a method of obtaining CEUs or PDHs for seminars, workshops and meetings (Don Dunn/Rodger Ziemer)

2.       Provide leadership training and opportunities for advancement

a)      Provide opportunities for leadership training on an annual basis

b)      Ensure each Section volunteer has access to basic information necessary to perform their job (e.g. training on a CD).

c)      Facilitate the exchange of “best practices” among volunteers

d)      Provide awards and recognition for successes and sponsorship for advancement in member grade and through the organization to positions of increasing responsibility.

 

Measure: Delivery, timeliness, and effectiveness as measured by surveys of Region, Section and student Branch officers. 

 

REGION EXCOM ACTION PLANS:

·        Continually analyze training requirements and resources available to determine the appropriate mix (web-based, meetings, tutorials, handbooks, etc.) for R5 volunteer training. (Area Chairs)

·        Make information of high value available for each Section volunteer position (Bill Whipkey).

·        Encourage the exchange of ideas/best practices during topical sessions at the annual R5 meeting (Paul Meisel).

·        Identify worthy volunteers and nominate them for awards and committee positions in higher levels of the organization (Past Directors)

·        Set up a mentoring program for each Region 5 committee to develop future R5 ExCom leaders.

·        Host a local Section at each ExCom meeting

3.       Identify and provide tangible benefits to industry such that IEEE is recognized as a essential partner with industry

a)      Establish closer relationships with local industry to identify and explore areas of mutual benefit.

b)      Establish an IEEE liaison (disciple) at major companies to promote those areas of mutual benefit.

c)      Increase recognition of industry relations efforts.

d)      Establish an Industry Liaison in each Section within the Region

 

Measure: Effectiveness as measured by number of IEEE disciples, co-sponsored IEEE/company programs, industry awards and feedback from Region, Section and Student Branch leaders and number of Sections with Industry Liaisons.

 

REGION EXCOM ACTION PLANS:

·        Establish a Region-level Industry Advisory Board made up of Industry Liaisons from the Sections.

·        Encourage nominations for Region industry awards, publicize results, promote winners to higher level IEEE industry awards

·        Ask each Section to establish an industry award.  Nominate Section winners for Regional award.

·        Encourage and support industry executive luncheons at the local levels

·        Develop a list of high-ranking company officials who are also IEEE members

·        Encourage nominations for RAB "Friends of IEEE" awards (Diane Collier)

·        Use Boeing model for template for developing IEEE Industry Relations (Jim Leonard)

4.       Promote community involvement and professional image

a)      Encourage IEEE involvement in areas of importance to local communities

b)      Raise visibility and public awareness of the profession.

 

Measure:  Number of local programs, number of appearances in local media.

 

REGION EXCOM ACTION PLANS:

·        Accumulate and disseminate information and support local units to become involved in pre-college activities (Todd Hiemer/Candy Robinson)

·        Promote and support E-Week activities in the local Sections and Chapters (Joe Lillie)

·        Provide information and training for Section and Chapter volunteers in public relations and media outreach

·        Cultivate and disseminate community forums educational information. 

·        Provide information and training for volunteers in local government activities (Dean/Pierce)

·        Provide training on how to become involved in participating in government activities (George Dean)

·        Develop a region wide government activities network through Sections and Chapters to support professional, career, and technical policy issues.

5.       Improve communications focus

a)      Take maximum advantage of electronic communication facilities.

b)      Maintain accurate lists of volunteers, contact information and responsibilities.

c)      Collect and distribute best practices across the Region and other IEEE entities.

d)      Improve two-way communication at and between all levels and units.

e)      Establish mentor relationships.

 

Measure:  Feedback between Region, Section, and Student Branch volunteers (periodic surveys); frequency of corrections to databases (accuracy of database); timeliness of updates from all levels; quarterly communication feedback from Director.

 

REGION EXCOM ACTION PLANS:

·        Maintain accurate, current information on R5 website (Zobrist/Chaffee)

·        Maintain R5 committee-level email lists (Area Chairs/John Meredith/Steve Chaffee)

·        Provide volunteer training in effective communications

·        Use teleconferencing as appropriate for effective communications

·        R5 ExCom to establish relevant mentorships between R5 ExCom and Section leadership, i.e. Area chairs and Section chairs; R5 Treasurer and Section Treasurers; R5 PACE committee and Section PACE committee, etc. 

·        Investigate the interaction between Sections and Student Branches and recommend improvements
