1999 NSERC Award Winners

Four IEEE members won NSERC awards in 1999. The Award winners were Dr. Norman C. Beaulieu, Dr. Mark R. Freeman who each won NSERC E.W.R Steacie Memorial Fellowships, and Dr. Hoan Huu Pham and Dr.Edward Sargent who were winners of the NSERC Doctoral Prizes.

The Steacie Fellowships are awarded to enhance the career development of outstanding and highly promising scientists and engineers who are faculty members of Canadian universities and who, at an early age of their career, are enjoying a reputation for original research in their field.

norman.jpg (12928 bytes) Dr. Norman C. Beaulieu has developed analytical tools for studying wireless communications systems. His mathematical and statistical models are used to predict how well new wireless and digital communications systems will perform
freeman.jpg (12265 bytes) By making a remarkable tool even more powerful, Dr. Mark R. Freeman has made fundamental and important contributions to condensed matter physics.

NSERC Doctoral Prizes recognize high quality research conducted by students completing their doctoral degree in science engineering. IEEE members winning the NSERC Doctoral Prizes are Dr. Hoan Huu Pham and Dr. Eward Sargent.

pham.jpg (11588 bytes) Dr. Pham has developed a breakthrough engineering tool with the potential to solve large scale microsystems problems.
sargent.jpg (13218 bytes) By developing not only the first theory of the lateral current injection laser, but also the base technology, Dr. Sargent has laid the foundation to replace computer microchips with vastly more powerful laser technology.
