Dr. Vijay K. Sood

Vijay Sood obtained his B.Sc. (1st class hons.) from University College, Nairobi, Kenya, and his M.Sc. degree from Strathclyde University, Glasgow, Scotland, in 1969. He obtained his Ph.D. degree in power electronics from the University of Bradford, Bradford, England, in 1977.

From 1969 to 1976, he was employed at the Railway Technical Centre, Derby, England. From 1976 to 2007, he was employed as a researcher at IREQ (Hydro-Québec) in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. In 2007, he joined the University of Ontario Institute of Technology (UOIT) as an associate professor. He has also been an adjunct professor at Concordia University, Montreal, since 1979 and at Ryerson University, Toronto, Ontario, Canada, and the University of Western Ontario, London, Ontario, Canada.

He is a member of the Ordre des ingénieurs du Québec, a Fellow (2006) of the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE) in the U.S.A., and a Fellow of the Engineering Institute of Canada (1999). He is the recipient of the 1998 Outstanding Service Award from IEEE Canada and the 1999 Meritas Award from the Ordre des ingénieurs du Québec. He was the managing editor of the IEEE Canadian Review (a quarterly journal for IEEE Canada) from 1996 to 2006. He is a director of the IEEE Canadian Foundation.

Dr. Sood has worked on the analogue and digital modelling of electrical power systems and their controllers for over 35 years. His research interests are focused on the monitoring, control, and protection of power systems using artificial intelligence techniques.

Dr. Sood has published over 70 articles and written two book chapters and one textbook on HVDC transmission. He has supervised numerous postgraduate students from universities all over the world. He is well known amongst the electrical engineering community in Canada.
