| Perturbation and Outage Probability Analysis for Cognitive Networks |
Organizers: |
IEEE Communications Society |
|
Date: |
Monday, October 19 at 1:00 p.m. |
|
Location: |
Room E2-361, EITC, University of Manitoba |
|
Abstract: |
|
|
| |
In this talk, a primary ad-hoc network working in parallel with a secondary ad-hoc network is considered. The main challenge in operating cognitive ad-hoc networks is the lack of a centralized controller performing resource allocation for different users in the network. This talk consists of two parts: First, a distributed power allocation scheme is considered for secondary users and its performance is analyzed when time average channel gains are substituted for instantaneous channel gains. In this way, it is not necessary to exchange channel information; however, users' allocated power will be perturbed. It is of interest to analyze mathematically this perturbation and to show how it affects the network performance. In particular, an upper bound on perturbation of each user's allocated power is obtained. Then, it is shown that how this perturbation affects throughput and the interference constraint for the secondary network. Second, to ensure quality-of-service for the licensed users, each active primary link needs to satisfy a minimum-rate constraint. In this case, the outage probability of each primary link is studied as a function of the number of primary and secondary users. Indeed, this analysis shows the rate at which the outage probability increases as more primary/secondary users are admitted to the network. It is shown that the outage probability is tightly bounded as the number of primary and secondary users goes to infinity in case that channel gains are independent and identically distributed (iid). If channel gains are not iid or calculating the distribution function is complicated due to path loss, it is still possible to bound the outage probability if the distances between transmitter-receiver pairs are bounded. However, there is a gap between the upper and lower bounds. The same problem is also studied in multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) ad-hoc networks. |

Abstract: |
|
|
| |
HVDC is certainly a mature technology. Over the past 40 years the majority of the problems that were encountered in the early days have been solved. In the last 10 years HVDC systems have been constructed at a dc voltage of +/- 500 kV and dc power of up to 3000 MW. The single converter per pole at 500 kV and up to 1500 MW became a standard building block.
However, lately there is the need to generate power from large Hydro plants at very remote locations and transmit this power to the load center in narrow transmission corridors. The level of power being considered is up to 6000 MW and the distances are over 2000 km. In this regard the current transmission voltage of 500 kV is not suitable. The transmission voltage of 800 kV per pole has been selected in many earlier studies. Obviously going to this voltage level has its challenges from dc equipment perspective, layout, and configuration. However these challenges are not only limited to the HVDC alone, it spreads to other issues of integrating a large HVDC system into the AC network. The integration issues such as reliability, voltage control and transients are just as important. |

Ever wanted to know what it takes to make a commercial video game?
Successful video game development can be very rewarding but it requires talent from multiple disciplines: mathematics, computer science, engineering, graphic design, music composition, arts, management, accounting, marketing (and more!).
We have developed a soon-to-be released Windows PC game titled 'Clones' (www.ClonesGame.com) As a puzzle game, it supports single player and multiplayer game types, different game modes, and a built-in level editor. We will discuss the process of game development, the important considerations when developing a game, the tools used, and some of the challenges and achievements of our team.
The game will be demonstrated and specific technologically interesting features will be discussed such as: A method to achieve perfect client synchronization in low bandwidth network. |
