Victor Fouad Hanna
The R8 Awards and Recognition sub-Committee (ARC-8) introduces IEEE Awards program to its members, urges them to nominate distinguished individuals for this program and makes the necessary arrangements to facilitate these nominations. This IEEE Awards program honours achievements in education, industry, research and service. Each award has a unique mission and criteria, and offers the opportunity to honour distinguished colleagues, inspiring teachers and corporate leaders. Nominations can be initiated by members and the public, then reviewed by a panel of peers - professionals who are especially knowledgeable in a particular field. Their recommendations are submitted to the IEEE Awards Board prior to ultimate approval by the IEEE Board of Directors.
The (ARC-8) also proposes to the R8 committee a special R8 Awards and Recognition program and follows the nomination procedure for this program. Nominations can be initiated by members, section chairs, chapter chairs, members of the (ARC-8) and the public, then reviewed by experts chosen by the (ARC-8). Their recommendations are submitted to the (ARC-8) prior to ultimate approval by the R8 committee.
The Region 8 Awards and Recognition Subcommittee Chair is Victor Fouad Hanna. Please contact him for further information.

Description of the awards :
1- "Clementina Saduwa Award"
Introduction :
In January 2007, Clementina Saduwa was assassinated in Nigeria. Clementina was Region 8 officer for Women In Engineering; and her character and her action were very much appreciated by everyone involved in Region 8 activities. She had been asked to take in 2007 the responsibility of Africa for sections and chapters before this tragic event. As an engineer, Clementina worked for ERICSSON, Swedish telecommunication company, where she was also highly estimated.
Region 8 wants to give a testimony to the memory of Clementina, as well as a strong signal to women engineers in a part of the world where women are not everywhere considered equal to men, moreover when they are engineers and hold responsibilities. The action therefore is to create an award honoring Clementina and her accomplishments. The proposed description of this award is:
To recognize a women engineer in Region 8 who, through their engineering and career achievements, have demonstrated noteworthy support for women in the profession and have established a benchmark of engineering excellence.
This idea has been circulated to the Region 8 Committee and received unanimous support.
For the first recipient of the award, Region 8 honored Clementina and gave her the award ‘post mortem”.

Joint Awards with National Societies
The IEEE establishes National Society Agreements with appropriate local societies in the various countries of the world to encourage and contribute to the progress of electricity, electronics, computing sciences, and allied branches of engineering and science - as well as education in those fields - for the ultimate benefit of the engineers and scientists of those countries.
The main purpose of these agreements is to generate cooperation between the country's National Society, and the local IEEE Section. It is hoped that this cooperation will assist in enhancing the image and position of the engineers and scientists of the country, as well as raising the image of IEEE to the general public.
One of the most successful means of cooperation, thus far, has been the establishment of a Joint National Society / IEEE award.
In the countries where these have been established, the energy and activities of the IEEE Section have increased greatly, as well as the visibility of the IEEE to the public.
These awards are fully sanctioned by the IEEE and the IEEE Awards Board, and have a high IEEE award level similar to an IEEE Technical Field Award. The award organizing committee and the jury for selecting the awardee are drawn from the country organizations cooperating in the joint award, with a representative of the IEEE Awards Board participating as liaison.
Through a grant from the IEEE Foundation, funds are available to assist in the process of creating the first award in a country. After the first award, all project funding must be developed from sources within the country.
The Awards Board has approved the establishment of nine Joint Awards.
