This paper presents a proposal for improving robustness and reliability in Delay Tolerant Networks (DTN), used to transmit large data files for healthcare applications. The scenario is the Marajó archipelago in the Brazilian Amazon, where communication infrastructure is almost non-existent and there is a special need for medical services. The use of Fountain codes, network coding and proximity layering to messages acknowledgments were investigated. Four Store-Carry-Forward protocols were analyzed by simulation and results show that the Spray and Wait protocol is the better option for the scenario.
