The CPMT Society Honors iNEMI's Bob Pfahl with its 2005 Electronics Manufacturing Technology Award
- Award was presented at the 30th International Electronics Manufacturing Technology Symposium (IEMT), held in conjunction with SEMICON West 2005
- Recognizes his prominent role in reducing environmental impact from electronic manufacturing processes and fostering collaboration within the manufacturing technology community
Piscataway, N.J. The IEEE Components, Packaging and Manufacturing Technology Society (CPMT) presented Dr. Robert (Bob) Pfahl, Jr. with its 2005 Electronics Manufacturing Technology Award at the 30th IEMT in San Francisco, Calif. Jan Vardaman (CPMT Board of Governors and TechSearch International) presented the award on behalf of the Society. Pfahl is the vice president of operations for the International Electronics Manufacturing Initiative (iNEMI), located in Herndon, Va. He was lauded for developing new manufacturing processes, reducing the environmental impact of electronic manufacturing processes and fostering collaboration within the manufacturing technology community.
"Dr. Pfahl's rich history brings a unique blend of technical expertise, environmental stewardship and international leadership to the manufacturing technology industry. We were pleased to recognize him for his accomplishments," said Phil Garrou, CPMT Society president.
The CPMT Electronics Manufacturing Technology Award honors major contributions in manufacturing, including technical development of, or management of major, new electronic manufacturing processes that significantly increase the yield and/or reliability of existing manufacturing processes.
In his 30-year career in the electronics industry, Pfahl pioneered reflow soldering processes and invented the vapor phase soldering process. He holds nine U.S. patents in electronics manufacturing technology.
Active with iNEMI since its beginning, he was a founding member of the organizations Technical Committee, served as director of roadmapping for the 1994 and 1996 cycles, and chaired the Environmentally Conscious Electronics chapter for the 1998 and 2002 NEMI roadmaps. Pfahl currently chairs the National Roadmap Coordinating Committee, which coordinates North American electronics roadmapping activities with electronics R&D activities in government and academia. He is a former member of the National Materials Advisory Board of the National Research Council (USA), and participated in its about to be released study, Globalization of Materials Research and Development.
Over the course of his career, Pfahl has developed an expertise in environmental issues affecting the electronics industry. He participated in the National Research Councils study, The Greening of Industrial Ecosystems. He is a member of the US EPA Scientific Advisory Boards Sub-committee on Industrial Ecology. In addition, Pfahl is a member of the editorial board of the Journal of Industrial Ecology and a member of the steering committee of the International Society of Industrial Ecology. In recognition of his efforts to eliminate the use of CFCs in the electronics industry, Pfahl received the 1991 United States EPA Stratospheric Ozone Protection Award for Executive Leadership and Industry Organizing.
Pfahl retired from Motorola in 2002 as director of international and environmental research and development at Motorola Labs, where he led Motorolas Environmental Technology R&D and Advanced Technology R&D labs in China and Germany. Prior to joining Motorola (in 1988), he worked with AT&T/Western Electric in several management positions.
Pfahl received his doctorate in mechanical engineering from Cornell University, Ithaca, NY, where he majored in heat transfer and fluid mechanics.
