IEEE-CPMT Society TC-1 Committee
on Electrical Contacts
Meeting Minutes
Tuesday September 26, 2006
4:45 PM
Delta Centre-Ville,
Chair: G. Witter
Vice-Chair: Bob Malucci
Secretary: C. Leung
Attendees:
Holm Conference Attendees
Opening: G. Witter
· TC-1 of IEEE-CPMT meeting was called to order by Chairman G. Witter.
1. Approval of minutes of previous meeting - G. Witter
· 2005 meeting minute has been posted at www.ewh.ieee.org/soc/cpmt/tc1/ web page. It was approved. Attendance list was circulated to capture new members, particular emphasis was put on e-mail for easier communication for the IEEE office.
2. Preliminary Report on 52nd IEEE-Holm Conference – Henry Czajkowski
· Total registration is 100 attendee plus 11 registered for the Internsive Course. 47 technical papers, Holm Award Lecture, Mort Antler Lecture and panel discussion .
· Conference sponsor program is working out good to help support the conference.
·
Ragnar Holm Scientific Achievement Awardee, Dr. John McBride, Univeristy
of Southampton,
·
The Dr. Morton Antler Invited Lecture was given by Dr. Werner Johler, Tyco Electronics AXICOM,
·
Panel
discussion by 4 experts on “Application and Properties of Nanomaterials in Electrical Contacts”.
1. Electrical
Contacts at the Nanometer Scale, Professor Mark Hersam,
Northwestern Univesity
2. Tribological Behavior of Nanostructured
Materials and Tribolobical Processes under Light
Loads, Professor D. Y. Li, University of Alberta.
3. Nanoscale Carbon materials for Enhanced Thermal and
Electrical Interfaces, Professor T. S. Fisher, Purdue University.
4. Passivating Properties of Molecular and Nanoscale
Layers, Professor W. Robert Ashurst, Auburn
University.
·
Visa
application for traveler from abroad is still making it difficult for scholars
from
3. Report on 2006 Intensive Course on Electrical Contact - Paul Slade
· After the 2005 Course with 26 students, the suggestion was to have the course immediately after the conference. So this year will be on 9/28-30 at the conference hotel. The feedback from the class is that the industry really needs the class for the young engineers. The 2006 class has 11 registrants.
4. Report on CPMT Transaction –John McBride
· Process for publication in CPMT journal involves reviews in Holm Technical committee by review coordinator with recommendations for CPMT publication. Last year netted 25 recommended papers. The publication limit is around 8 papers, so the editor reviews again and also invited additional referees. By October, the 7-8 authors would be contacted by CPMT about the reviews.
· 2004 Holm and ICEC has 9-10 papers published
· 2005 Holm papers have 7-8 completed and waiting for publication.
5. World Calendar
· Web link of world calendar events – forward notice to Chi Leung.
6. Publicity – Chi Leung
· Web and CPMT newsletter will be the primary medium for TC1 and Holm information. Many members have used the web for info and registration to conference.
7. International Conference on Electrical Contact ICEC2006:
·
Professor Koichio Sawa, reported that the 23rd ICEC at
·
Total is 122 abstracts
and the distribution as follows: 48
· Finally 108 papers were included in the proceeding. 66 papers were presented at the technical sessions, and 35 presented in poster sessions.
· 239 registered and netted a good financial picture.
· The proceeding in pdf format is also published in CD-ROM..
8. TC1 sub-committee Reports:
· Material
restrictions and substitution – Dr. Volker Behrens
ROHS July 2006 has exemptions of AgCdO. All exemptions are to be reviewed in a maximum of 4
years. This is expected to be reviewed as early as 2 years.
· Automotive
– George Drew
Connectors in
· High Frequency
Connectors – Roland Timsit
Hot field, and applied to automobiles. HF connector designers are in shortage.
Research work continues to be needed..
·
MEMs and micro-contact technology – Bob Malucci
Continues with work shop and a panel discussion with 4 experts in the field.
· High
current applications: Arc fault detection and contactors – John Shea and
Henry Czajkowski
John Shea reports on Arc Fault Detection
- Arc fault protection has competitive developments in US. New 2008 NEC code
change needs AFCI devices. Many different techniques are there to get the job
done. Proprietary designs are there to reduce nuisance tripping and size
reduction.
Henry Czajkowski
reports: Motor Controls
- Business is stable. Material side still has CdO
contacts used in large quantities. NEMA products use CdO
for performance and cost. Designs are to be smaller and cheaper in a very
mature product. Distributed controllers
are active, i.e. in motors and not in centralized panels. There are vibration
issues. Modular controllers and bus bar system with control and
breakers cmounted on. High cost of copper in 2006 is
a challenge.
Paul Slade
report on High Vacuum Contactors
- 15KV, wind mill applications, contactors for 1000 to 1400A with vacuum
contactors doing well. Adding
more functionality and intelligence into contactors;
9. New
Business –
Pb free story – Dr. Werner Johler, Pb
free soldering is at 50% use with no visible impact on reliability.
Copper twisted pair for high data transmission, Fibre
to the house, telecommunication relays and RF switching are technologies to
keep an eye on.
Respectfully submitted, Chi Leung, 8/2007
