lEEE EMC Society Hall of Fame Award - James P McNaul
James P McNaul

Founder of the Professional Group on RFI.

Second President of the Administrative Committee of the PGRFI.

Jim McNaul started his career as an officer at the Army Signal Corps R&D Labs at Ft. Monmouth, NJ in 1956.  He was assigned as Assistant Project Officer to Project MONMOUTH, a large scale investigation of communication systems in a future European war, with particular emphasis on new communication technologies and the radio frequency interference potential resulting from their introduction into the Army structure.  After this, his interest shifted to low-noise devices being planned for communication satellite systems and their effects on system performance.

In 1961, he joined the Army Satellite Communications Agency, becoming Assistant Technical Director.  He was very active in NATO discussions leading up to the CCIR 1963 Plenary meeting which for the first time assigned frequencies for communication satellites.  He was a member of the US delegation to the CCIR meeting.

In 1964, Jim returned to school at Stanford University, where he earned his Ph.D. in business as an Alfred P. Sloan fellow.  He then pursued a career in academia and business, with such organizations as Ohio State University, Ford Aerospace, Harris Corp. and Xerox as well as several start-up companies.  His emphasis was on digital imaging and communications.  He held various positions managing technology and marketing as well as general management.  He was a member of the Board of Directors of two public companies, Sigma Designs, Inc. and Terminal Data Corp.  He was also on the boards of several private companies; Avalanche Development Corp., Docupoint Inc. and FastLan Solutions, Inc., of which he president and founder.  He retired in 1999.
