How to Become an
EMCS Distinguished Lecturer
The EMC Society's Distinguished Lecturer (DL) Program
provides speakers on various aspects of electromagnetic compatibility
for EMC Society chapter meetings and similar functions. DLs are
reimbursed for certain travel expenses up to a recommended limit of
$750 per engagement. While presentations to groups outside of the EMC
Society and the IEEE are encouraged, the program is not intended for
national or international EMC symposiums, regional conventions, local
colloquiums, trade shows, or commercial seminars. (DLs may speak at
these functions, but their expenses cannot be reimbursed from DL
funds.)
Distinguished Lecturers must:
- Prepare their own talks and presentation materials
(Most talks are expected to be about one hour with questions, but
speakers should negotiate this with their hosts.)
- Obtain any releases necessary from their employer
- Represent the IEEE EMC Society in a professional
manner
- Make their own committments with speaking engagement
hosts
- Make their own travel arrangements
- Submit an IEEE Travel Expense Report on returning
home for reimbursement (can take 4-6 weeks after the TER is submitted).
- Send a brief report to the DL chair after an
engagement giving:
- The name of the hosting organization
- Speaking location
- Title of the talk given and its duration
- Number of attendees
- Amount of travel reimbursement requested
Membership in the EMC Society's Distinguished Lecturer
program shall not be used in the advertising of products or services,
nor for any non- approved presentations such as product or training
seminars or trade shows. Distinguished Lecturers may not, as part of
any DL presentation, advertise, market, or offer for sale any
commercial product or service.
To become a DL, you must:
- Be a member of the IEEE EMC Society
- Have the energy and a strong desire to do this
- Have relevant experiences you are willing and able to
share
- Be a competent public speaker
- Be a flexible traveler
- Be willing to treat your audience as colleagues and
customers, not as students
The program currently consists of four Distinguished
Lecturers, selected by the Program Chairman from written nominations or
application from EMC Society members, and approved by the EMC Society
Board of Directors. The term for each Distinguished Lecturer is two
years. Currently all terms start and end at the turn of a calendar
year. Selection is based on:
- Professional competence and recognition of EMC
expertise
- Communication and presentation skills
- EMC topics a prospective speaker can offer
- Contribution of these offerings to a balanced program
(with regard to presentations given by other DLs)
- Written recommendation of EMC Society members.
Interested applicants should submit a package of
supporting information to the DL program chair prior to July 1 for
terms beginning at start of the next year, or otherwise by special
arrangement. As a minimum, these packages should contain:
- A cover letter stating why you want to be a DL and
what you have to offer. Specifically, you should list and describe the
topics you are willing to speak about. Please provide two or more
topics.
- A resume or other brief, factual summary of your
qualifications and how to contact you.
- One or more letters of recommendation from EMC
Society members.
Other useful information includes announcements for
previous speaking engagements, outlines or summaries of talks already
prepared, lists of publications, etc. This package will be submitted to
the EMCS Board of Directors for their review and action.
