The Clipboard

Our design was based on the clipboard metaphor. As shown in figure 8, the professor and students' pen-based computers display a clipboard. In the upper left-hand corner, electronic transparencies sent by the professor are displayed. In the lower left- hand corner, a notepad allows both students' questions and professor's answers to be written and system messages to be displayed. The entire right side is an electronic sheet for note-taking. This "sheet of paper" may be configured by the student to reveal his/her preferences (e.g. lined, blue). Several electronic sheets are available to the students. Groups of sheets are automatically linked to the transparency shown on the left side. When the electronic pen reaches the bottom of the screen, various tool icons are displayed and may be selected.
