TRANSACTIONS ON EDUCATION SUPPLEMENTS ONLINE
The Transactions on Education (ToE) is the paper-based journal of the Society. From August 1999 through May 2001 the Society published several Supplement(s) to the ToE. The Supplement(s) are chock full of top quality articles on topics that are directly relevant to our Society.

The Supplement(s) were published on 5 CDs and mailed to Society members. As a service to those who cannot avail themselves of the CDs, or were not Society members at that time, Marion Hagler put quite a bit of time and effort into placing the Supplement(s) onto the IEEE server so that they can be available to all Education Society members. The Supplements(s) contains terrific articles and it's well worth your time to look-them-over. To review them, click the "more info" link just below.

THINKING ABOUT SUBMITTING A PAPER TO THE TRANSACTIONS ON EDUCATION??
The Transactions on Education (ToE) is the Education Society's professional journal, which all members receive. It is published quarterly. Editor-in-Chief David Conner and his staff do an outstanding job of selecting relevant articles and preparing them for publication.

If you are considering submitting an article to the ToE please refer to the "manuscript information" link on the Society's web site or click the "more info" link at the bottom of this article. BUT read the next section first as there have been some revisions in the manuscript policy that have not been posted to the EdSoc's web site.

Transactions' Policy Revision

David Conner states that "since the Society just received important member survey information, the Transactions' has added additional author instructions that will be integrated into the Transactions information posted on the Society website."

The revised manuscript policy will state the following:

The Transactions is responsible for publishing manuscripts that address educational content within Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, and allied disciplines such as Electrical Engineering Technology, Computer Science, and Information Technology or that address a topic in K-12 education or industrial education. To be appropriate for publication review, a submitted manuscript:

  • (1) must be written in the third person, be typed in 12-point type, have a single-column format, and be double-spaced;
  • (2) must include a description of the course or course sequence in which the content is presented;
  • (3) must provide a description of the pedagogical issues being addressed by the content;
  • (4) must be written in a format that allows educators in the sub-discipline of the manuscript to be able to utilize the contents in the manuscript to improving instruction at their institution; and
  • (5) must include student assessment data that provides information relative to the strengths and weaknesses of the curriculum content in satisfying the pedagogical issues being addressed.

    START AN EDSOC CHAPTER
    If you are interested in FORMING A CHAPTER of the IEEE Education Society, please review the
    IEEE Society Chapter Petition web page, which outlines the process of forming a new chapter or changing the status of existing chapters. Need help, contact Rob Reilly (reilly@media.mit.edu) for assistance.

    ARE YOU AN 'ASSOCIATE' MEMBER??
    Take a look on your IEEE membership card. Under your name is your membership grade. If it says ASSOCIATE then you should consider upgrading to become a MEMBER. There is no cost for this action.

    For more details click here and scroll down the web page to the "IEEE Awards" section. There is a clickable link to the IEEE Web page that will allow you to self-upgrade; or click here to go directly to the IEEE self-upgrade web page.

    ARE YOU A SENIOR MEMBER??
    "And why not? Many members do not understand the requirements for and benefits of becoming a Senior Member. Contrary to popular opinion, a Nobel Prize in Physics, 40 years of experience, and a Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering are not prerequisites for becoming a Senior Member! Senior Membership confers benefits not only on the member but on his Section as well...
    apply now! For details on b ecoming a Senior Member, visit the IEEE Senior Member Program page." (Connecticutt IEEE Section's home page, 2003).

    If you are interested in pursuing this, you should start in your local chapter or section, or contact people you 'know' from conferences as you will need to have 3 references from IEEE members who know you personally.

    FIE 2004 CALL FOR PAPERS
    The Frontiers in Education conference (FIE) is co-sponsored by the
    Education Society, the IEEE Computer Society, and the American Association for Engineering Education (ASEE). It is held annually during the first week in November (or late October). It is an outstanding conference with a program agenda that suits the needs of all members.

    The 2004 Frontiers in Education conference (FIE) will be held in Savannah, Georgia USA from October 20-23, 2004. General Chair Joseph Hughes has issued the Call For Papers (CFP). Click "more info" to review the CFP.

    ITHET 2004 CONFERENCE
    Professor Okyay Kaynak has announced that the Information Technology-based Higher Education and Training (ITHET) conference will be held in Turkey from May 31 through June 2, 2004.

    The conference overview states that:

    "The convergence of current technologies provides the infrastructure for transmitting and storing information faster and cheaper. For information to be used in gaining knowledge, however, environments for collecting, storing, disseminating, sharing and constructing knowledge are needed. Such environments, knowledge media, brings together the telecommunication, computer and networking technologies, learning theories and cognitive sciences to form meaningful environments that provides for a variety of learner needs. The World Wide Web is one such technology that provides access to valuable educational resources such as e-mail, e-groups, bulletin board services, audio conferencing, video conferencing, e-journals, search engines and databases. The web is also used to deliver online instruction or support conventional courses. The effective online delivery of instruction depends on fast and timely delivery of instructions in learning environments that cater to students’ academic, administrative and support needs. ITHET2004 aims to provide an environment for experts to discuss the current state of the art for learning both in industry and universities. Virtual environments, e-training and e-learning will be topics of particular interest."

    ADCOM MEETING UPDATE
    The Education Society's
    Administrative Committee (AdCom) met during the FIE03 Conference in Boulder, Colorado USA. The AdCom has oversight responsibility of Education Society. Much of the meeting dealt reports from the various standing committees activities, reports on previous FIE conferences, reports on the financial business of the Society, possible cooperation with other IEEE Societies and other engineering groups. The AdCom also acted on a number of By Law changes.

    The AdCom approved the creation of this newsletter/bulletin. They also elected a new slate of officers and 4 new AdCom members (to replace those whose term expired). Traditionally the officers serve two one-year terms and then move up. This was the 2nd-year of the cycle thus all the officers were reelected: David Kerns, president; Dan Litynski, vice president; Joseph Hughes, secretary; Rod Soukup, treasurer. Tony Mitchell, John Orr, Susan Conry, and Haniph Latchman were elected to serve 3-year terms on the AdCom. Congratulations to all those who were elected.

    To gain a sense of the important oversight responsibilities the Officers and the AdCom has you may want to review the minutes of previous meetings.

    ADMINISTRIVIA
    This is a service of the IEEE Education Society. It will be published as the need for information dissemination arises. Our expectation is that News & Notes will be published bi-monthly. However, if urgent information surfaces a bulletin with just that information will be sent out.

    If you would like an item placed in News & Notes, send it to: Rob Reilly, Editor (reilly@media.mit.edu).

    As of November 2003 the Education Society has 3,164 members.
