NEW EDSOC PUBLICATION—PEDAGOGY & CURRICULUM??
At its June meeting the EdSoc's Administrative Committee (AdCom) asked Transactions's Editor-in-Chief David Conner to look-into the feasibility of creating another publication that would address "curriculum and teaching pedagogy" issues and report back to them at the November 2004 AdCom meeting in Savannah, GA USA (FIE Conference).

This action was prompted by the AdCom's interest in responding to the 2003 IEEE Membership Survey of the EdSoc members. Among a wide-range of questions, the Survey asked subjects to: "Indicate the amount of content coverage in the following areas you would like to see in IEEE Education Society publications, conferences, products and services." The respondees indicated that they wanted to see more "curriculum and teaching pedagogy." In reviewing the data from this question the AdCom noted that "curriculum and teaching pedagogy" generated almost twice the number of responses as did the second place item.

EDSOC DISTINGUISHED MEMBER AWARD MOVING FORWARD
Under the leadership of Burks Oakley II, and with the support of the AdCom, the EdSoc is moving toward IEEE-approval of the Distinguished Member Award.

This award will "recognize outstanding long-term service to the Education Society and significant contributions to higher education in fields of interest of the IEEE."

According to Oakley, "to be eligible for this award a person must have been a member of Education Society for at least the previous ten years." He also noted that "multiple awards may be given each year."

The award consists of a commemorative plaque that will be presented at the annual FIE Conference, which is held every fall.

Oakley also notes that "the award is based upon evidence of distinction in long-term service to the Education Society... and that selection criteria includes leadership roles and leadership quality, innovative and important contributions to the Education Society, service and dedication to the Education Society, and technical achievement."

Oakley expects that the first awards will be given at the FIE 2005 Conference in Indianapolis, Indiana USA.

BATCHMAN PRESENTATION STILL GOING STRONG AFTER IT'S CONCLUSION!!
This past May Ted Batchman gave an online presentation entitled: "Getting Published in the IEEE Transactions on Education," which ran approximately 10 days.

The presentation concluded several weeks ago, but the traffic into the archive of that presentation is still very robust—about 5-7 hits per day into the Batchman archive.

ENCORE: ARE YOU A SENIOR MEMBER??
And why not? Many members do not understand the requirements for and benefits of becoming a Senior Member. Contrary to popular opinion, a Nobel Prize in Physics, 40 years of experience, and a Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering are not prerequisites for becoming a Senior Member! Senior Membership confers benefits not only on the member but on his Section as well...
apply now! For details on becoming a Senior Member, visit the IEEE Senior Member Program page. (Connecticut IEEE Section's home page, 2003).

If you are interested in pursuing this, you should start in your local chapter or section, or contact people you 'know' from conferences as you will need to have 3 references from IEEE members who know you personally.
