NEW TWIST TO PURDUE'S ENGINEERING PROGRAM
In a Chronicle of Higher Education story, Kelly Field reports that several USA engineering departments have implemented changes in degree programs. Field highlights the Purdue program which is the first department of engineering education to combine a first year engineering program and an interdisciplinary engineering program. The ASEE's July newsletter also notes that this program: "calls for offering master's and doctoral degrees in engineering education, and also certification programs for high school teachers." Quoting the College of Engineering's Web site:

The first of its kind in the nation, Purdue’s new Department of Engineering Education hopes to attract younger students to the engineering field while researching the ways they learn. Combining the Departments of Freshman Engineering and Interdisciplinary Engineering, this initiative hopes to redefine engineering education.

CALL FOR NOMINATIONS—OFFICERS AND ADMIN COMMITTEE
The Society's Constitution requires the Nominating Committee to prepare a slate of nominees for Member-at-Large vacancies on the Administrative Committee and for all Officer's positions. This slate of nominees will be voted upon in late October.

Any member can be automatically placed on the slate of nominees by submitting a petition to the Chair of the Nominating Committee. Such a petition must carry a minimum of 25 signatures of Education Society members (excluding students).

Any Society member can make a recommendation to the Nominating Committee for their consideration. Or, of course, petitions can be submitted.to the Nominating Committee. But all 'recommendations' and petitions must be submitted by September 15th to Marion Hagler (hagler@ece.msstate.edu) who is the Committee Chair.

TRANSACTIONS ISSUES CALL FOR PAPERS—MOBILE TECHNOLOGY
Contributions are invited for a special issue on “Mobile Technology for Education” of the IEEE Transactions on Education. This special issue is motivated by the emergence and development of mobile technology for teaching, learning, and education. Mobile technology has brought tremendous potential and opportunities for educators to enable and deliver learning in ways that could not have been accomplished before. With its unique features and functions such as mobility, reachability, localization, and personalization, mobile technology shows considerable promise in supporting and delivering education as compared to the traditional means. Mobile technology that can be or has been used to support education include, but are not limited to, WAP, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and SMS. Any time, anywhere, situated learning is now possible, and one can even conduct education-related activities while on the move. Terms such as mobile education and mobile learning have been coined to highlight the new phenomenon.

The special issue will focus on mobile technology as it is currently covered within the disciplines of electrical engineering, computer engineering, electrical engineering technology, computer engineering technology, and allied disciplines (such as Computer Science and Information Technology).

EIT CONFERENCE—MILWAUKEE, WI USA—OCTOBER 2004
The IEEE Region 4 Electro/Information Technology Conference provides a forum for researchers to present basic or applied research results in the fields of engineering related to information technology and its applications.

The conference will be held from August 26-27, 2004 at the Milwaukee School of Engineering Milwaukee, Wisconsin, USA.

Research papers from electrical engineering, computer engineering, computer science, biomedical engineering, bioinformatics, and medical informatics will be presented in parallel tracks throughout the conference. Conference participants will also be able to register for workshops, tutorials, and professional development seminars. Exhibits of the latest electro/information technology tools and products will be showcased. A keynote panel of leaders from the information technology industries will open the conference and help to guide participants in thinking about the future of information technology engineering.

Papers will be accepted through August 1st and peer reviewed as they are received. Submit a full electronic paper to Dr. R. Meier (meier@msoe.edu). PDF format is preferred. Papers must be 15 double spaced pages or less. Final papers will be due August 16, 2004.
