CREATING WORLD-WIDE IMPACT FOR THE EDUCATION SOCIETY
In an electronic conversation among the officers and Administrative Committee of the Education Society, Society Secretary Joseph Hughes (Georgia Tech, USA) asked if anyone had an interest "in organizing a meeting at FIE, open to all conference attendees, to gather ideas and discuss potential EdSoc activities targeted at" developing a more world-wide perspective for the Society. Mats Daniels from Sweden was quick to support this concept. He noted that an "important part of this is to offer international experiences." Education Society Vice President Dan Litynski from the USA echoed the notion that this is a "great idea and international relationships" is an area of interest for him.

Trond Clausen of Norway, Vice Chair of the Chapters Committee, enthusiastically supported this effort; he stated:

The democratic way our Societies are governed and work, the very style of their business meetings, the quality of their professional affairs, their growing international membership - and their open including and friendly ways of personal intercourse seem to be an established culture. I do believe such qualities may form a good platform for the ongoing internationalization process.

Thus, I'm supporting this process and looking forward to [the] special FIE session on internationalization in Savannah.

The exact time and day for the meetings will be contained in the conference's tote bags. If you are attending the conference, be sure to attend at least one of the sessions. Your input will be very valuable.

IF YOU CANNOT ATTEND, please send your comments about "ways that the Education Society can become a more 'international' organization" to Trond Clausen of Norway (trond.clausen@hit.no) or to Manuel Castro of Spain (mcastro@ieec.uned.es). Trond and Manuel will compile your comments and provide a report to the officers and Administrative Committee, who are ready and willing to take action!

ENCORE: NEXT ONLINE DISCUSSION—DEFINING & TEACHING ENGINEERING ETHICS
University of Texas Professor Billy V. Koen will be the next guest speaker in the Education Society's online discussion forum. His topic will be 'defining and teaching of engineering ethics.' Currently this presentation is scheduled to begin on or about October 5th.

Professor Koen is noted for his cutting edge points-of-view and this session promises to be a very interesting discussion of a very timely topic—defining and teaching engineering ethics.

Billy V. Koen has been a mechanical engineering professor at The University of Texas/Austin since 1968. He served from 1988-1993 as Vice President of ASEE and has held 25 different positions and is an ASEE Fellow. He is the author of Discussion of the Method: Conducting the Engineer’s Approach to Problem Solving (Oxford University Press, March 2003) and Definition of the Engineering Method (ASEE, 1985). He has received Olmsted, Chester F. Carlson, Centennial Medallion, and W. Leighton Collins awards from ASEE. He received the Helen Plants Award in 1994 and in 1985, and the Benjamin Dasher Award in 1984 and again in 1985.

To provide some background material for this presentation, two of Professor Koen's most recent papers are available online. These papers were presented at the Nashville ASEE Conference in June 2003:

On Defining Engineering Ethics: A Challenge to the Engineering Community

On Teaching Engineering Ethics: A Challenge to the Engineering Professoriate
