TRANSACTIONS ON EDUCATION CFP: GRID-BASED TECHNOLOGIES APPLIED TO EDUCATION
IEEE Transactions on Education Editor-in-Chief, David Conner, has issued a
Call For Papers. The theme of this Special Issue is Grid-based Technologies Applied to Education.

Grid-based technologies enable the sharing, exchange, discovery, and aggregation of resources (processors, storage, scientific devices, information, knowledge, etc.) across geographically distributed sites. Although these technologies were primarily intended to support scientific research, they are increasingly deployed in other domains, such as business, industry, government or education. Grid technology has great potential in education as it offers a framework by which to develop new pedagogies of teaching and learning.

IEEE Transactions on Education seeks original and unpublished manuscripts for a special issue reporting solid and innovative experiences in the application of Grid technologies to the education environment. This special issue is intended to gather high-quality papers that will provide a major reference source in this emerging and challenging field. Suggested topics include (but are not limited to) the following.

  • Grid middleware to support education
  • Use of ad hoc Grids in teaching and learning
  • Distance education using Grids
  • Collaborative educational environments based on Grid technologies
  • Grid portals utilized in an educational environment
  • Grid-based remote laboratories
  • Nation-wide and international educational programs supported by Grid technologies
  • Grid-based resource sharing (CPU, data, applications, instruments, etc.) for educational purposes
Thus, manuscripts should address lessons learned from:
  • the application of Grid technologies,
  • the impact on teaching and learning,
  • individual and organizational implications,
  • feasibility and effectiveness of the Grid-based approach.
Each manuscript must contain meaningful and statistically-sound assessment data supporting the conclusions presented in the manuscript.
  • Manuscript Submission Deadline: 30 September 2005

For more information see the Call For Papers document.

TAC OF ABET TRAINING OPPORTUNITIES AT PORTLAND ASEE CONFERENCE
ABET still has availability for TAC of the ABET Institutional Representative Briefing - and it is FREE of charge. This session immediately precedes the ASEE Conference in Portland next month.

The Faculty Workshop in Program Improvement, which is led by TAC members, has 12 positions remaining open. The TAC members will guide institutional representatives through TC2K, the Technology Accreditation Commission's new outcomes-based evaluation criteria. The topics include:

  • self-study preparation,
  • pre-visit planning,
  • on-campus visit activities, and
  • post-visit processes.

This workshop is designed to benefit faculty in technology, computing, applied science, and engineering. The workshop will prepare all participants in these disciplines for outcomes-based accreditation. In fact, one thing attendees will definitely take home with them is the understanding that outcomes assessment benefits any program, regardless of subject. Case studies used in the workshops will cross all ABET disciplines. Engineering technology faculty may analyze computer science program objectives; and all participants will gain the knowledge needed to bring educational reform to their campuses.

For more information go to http://www.abet.org/open_workshops.html. No onsite registrations. Click here to register online (www.peopleware.net/1989) Please contact Stephanie Engelhardt for further information at sengelhardt@abet.org or telephone USA +1-410-347-7727.

ENCORE: ARE YOU A SENIOR MEMBER??
"And why not? Many members do not understand the requirements for and benefits of becoming a Senior Member. Contrary to popular opinion, a Nobel Prize in Physics, 40 years of experience, and a Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering are not prerequisites for becoming a Senior Member! Senior Membership confers benefits not only on the member but on his Section as well...
apply now! For details on becoming a Senior Member, visit the IEEE Senior Member Program page." (Connecticut IEEE Section's home page, 2003).

If you are interested in pursuing this, you should start in your local chapter or section, or contact people you 'know' from conferences as you will need to have 3 references from IEEE members who know you personally.
