Student Activity Committee has terrifically fast start

The Education Society has 221 student members. Until now there have not been any Society-sponsored programs to support them. To address this issue, the Chapters Committee sent out a call-for-participation to the students. The result of that 'call' bore quick results, and even quicker action. Under the guidance of several Chapters Committee members, who are college faculty members or leaders in industry, the students have formed a committee structure and are well-along their way to creating an online publication, which will contain peer-reviewed papers and other student-relevant items.

This is the first program that the Student Activity is developing; others will be developed as more students (and others) become involved.

Spanish-Portuguese language publication in planning phase

Manuel Castro (Madrid, Spain) received authority from the Education Society's (EdSoc) Administrative Committee (AdCom) to proceed with the creation of a proposal for an EdSoc publication in Spanish-Portuguese. This publication may contain peer-reviewed journal articles and other relevant articles. The exact nature of this publication will be discussed by a committee composed of Manuel Castro (Spain), David Conner (Editor-in-Chief, Transactions on Education), and Rob Reilly (USA). From those discussions a proposal will be submitted to the AdCom at its Indianapolis meeting in October.

Send comments and suggestions to Manuel Castro (mcastro@ieec.uned.es).

EdSoc awards deadline approaching

Awards Committee Chair and Society Vice President Joseph Hughes announced that the deadline for several prestigious EdSoc awards is closing-in upon us. August 15th is the deadline for submission of award nominations for the following awards:
  • Meritorious Service Award — significant service to the Society
  • Achievement Award — distinguished technical accomplishment in engineering education
  • Hewlett-Packard/Harriet B. Rigas Award — outstanding accomplishments for a women in ECE.
  • McGraw-Hill Book Award — publishing pedagogically innovative engineering education book
For further information, please review the EdSoc's Awards Web Page.
Society chapters growing in numbers

In May, 2003 the EdSoc has 9 chapters. In October 2004, there were 21 chapters. Today there are 32 chapters! That is terrific growth. Even better news is the fact that there are Society members in 29 additional IEEE Sections collecting signatures for the purpose of forming a chapter.

In light of this, the Administrative Committee (AdCom) also allocated $5,000 USD to the Chapters Committee to support chapter activity. The AdCom has asked the Awards Committee to review several Chapter-specific award proposals (i.e., chapter leadership award, outstanding chapter award) and make recommendations at its October meeting.

Web site and News&Notes evaluated by members

Over the past few months, the general membership has been asked their opinion about the Society's Web site and about this publication. The results have been very encouraging and enlightening. Comments from membership have been very helpful in guiding the Society's efforts to provide services to the members.

The various committees are reviewing the results. Action will be forthcoming; although most suggestions in regard to the format for this publication have been implemented with this issue.

The tables and narrative comments for each survey are available at:

EdSoc moves forward: What's on the horizon

by Rob Reilly, Editor

At its June 13-14 meeting in Portland, Oregon USA the Society's Administrative Committee (AdCom) took some note-worthy actions and had some interesting discussions. Note: in some cases herein my comments are my personal opinion from listening to the AdCom's conversation as opposed to official AdCom action.

In addition to acting on many day-to-day/routine items, the AdCom:

  • is forming working groups to react to a recent review by the IEEE. [My opinion follows] This may mean more/expanded emphasis/focus on teaching pedagogy, educational technology, and professional development programs,
  • may see a formal effort to establish a Distinguished Lecturer Program (DLP), which will evolve from the current online speaker presentations. The DLP may be an online format and will likely (also) be in an in-person format.
  • is likely to wrestle with foundational issues (i.e., where is our profession going, K-12/pre-college), and accreditation issues (i.e., Mechatronics, Systems Engineering, Bio-X),
  • may address the creation of an "effective teaching workshop(s)" at the FIE and/or ASEE conferences. [end my opinion].
  • will also be a revising the current Strategic Plan, which will likely be part of the process noted in the first bullet item.
  • had a brief conversation about creating a Journal/Transactions on Web-based Technologies. David Conner, the Co-Chair of the Publications Committee and Editor-in-Chief of the IEEE Transactions on Education stated that this publication: "would be a gold mine... it's a terrific idea and we should move forward with it." This publication would focus on instructional tools, methods of delivery, and the underlying pedagogy. I expect that the AdCom will appoint a committee to move forward with this at its October meeting.
