South America: Student Activity News From University at Campinas
Professor Hugo Enrique Hernandez Figueroa, the Chair of the South Brazil Chapter, reports that they are about to
have their first
Education Society Student Chapter. While there are a large number of IEEE student chapters on various campuses throughout the world, there are no Education
Society Student Chapters. This will be the first Education Society Student Chapter!
Hugo's IEEE Student Branch is more active than ever. Now they are
organizing the 1st Electrical Engineering Student National Meeting
(ENEEL, stands for: 1o Encontro Nacional de Estudantes de Engenharia
Eletrica). This will be held at UNICAMP (Campinas, Brazil) Campus in May
2006. This conference is a result of the Campinas Student Branch's active
participation in student branch national and regional meetings, and assuming a
leadership role at those meetings.
Note: the IEEE South Brazil Section is the only IEEE section to have more than one regular Education Society Chapter
within its borders. It has 2 chapters; this is due to geographical-travel issues. Having 2 chapters in one IEEE section
is an anomaly but it is very much warranted given the potential level of activity. Now there will be a student chapter!
We are looking for great things to happen in the IEEE South Brazil Section.

Online Courses for Hurricane Katrina Victims
A number of IEEE Education Society (EdSoc) members are part of an effort sponsored by the
Sloan Consortium to provide free
online college courses to students from institutions impacted by Hurricane Katrina. This
program also provides free online college courses for students serving in the National Guard
whose studies were interrupted by being called to active duty in the aftermath of Hurricane
Katrina.
We give a hearty pat on the back to all those EdSoc members who are part of
this effort.
See the article in the September 12th Chicago Sun-Times regarding University of Illinois'
Burks Oakley and his efforts in regard to Hurricane Katrina.

San Diego FIE 2006: Call for Papers
The 2006 Frontiers in Education Conference (FIE 2006) continues a long tradition of promoting the widespread dissemination of innovations that improve computer science, engineering, and technology (CSET) education. FIE is a major annual international conference devoted to improvements in CSET education. It is an ideal forum for sharing your ideas, learning about new developments in CSET education, and interacting with your colleagues.
CSET education faces significant challenges in crossing international, cultural, and social borders in order to expand the pool of those entering CSET education and prepare our graduates to be successful in the global economy with diverse groups of people. Successfully addressing these issues will require innovative solutions including use of new pedagogies and approaches that improve student learning; partnerships among academia, industry, government, and K-12 educators; and curricular reform. In 2006 in the border city of San Diego, the Frontiers in Education conference planners are especially interested in abstracts that address issues related to how CSET education can identify and surmount international, cultural, and social borders.
The FIE technical program will include paper presentations, panels, special sessions, and workshops. Abstracts are being solicited for contributed peer-reviewed full papers and works-in-progress. Proposals also are invited for panels, special sessions, and workshops.

Student Publication Moving Forward!
Under the direction of Student Activity Committee Chair, Marcelo Castro (Brazil), Vice Chair Emmanuel
Gonzalez (Philippines), and Editor, Leyden Martinez, (Germany), a quarterly
online student peer-reviewed journal will be born quite soon. The Student Activity Committee is moving forward at great speed in hopes of
publishing their first issue in January (pending AdCom approval). A draft Table of Contents for the first issue is available for
review at:
http://www.emmgon.com/ieee
The topics outlined in the proposed first issue on the URL just above are typical of the topics that will contained in each
issue. It appears that this committee is full of energy and doing great things!
