Professor Saliah Hassane Leads Development Effort in Niger
Professor Hamadou
Saliah Hassane organized a tour of several African countries for the purpose of developing engineering education at the
college and pre-college level.
The tour started on November 22, 2007 with a warm welcome from the organizing committee in Niamey, Niger. Professor Saliah Hassane efforts are funded by the IEEE Foundation and by the IEEE Education Society.
Leading the Niger organizing committee was Dr. Zeinabou Mindaoudou, Eng. & Researcher at Radio Isotope
Institute Research Center of University Abdou Moumouni Dioffo (UAMD) of Niamey, Niger.
Several activities took place during his stay in Niamey.

Under the leadership of IEEE leader Professor Andy Fan at the University of Macau, another Education Society chapter
has been born. There is a tremendous synergy between this new chapter and the EdSoc chapter in Hong Kong. In June 2007
there was a planning meeting in Macau to discuss the possibilities and future directions for the new chapter.
In the photo to the left are a number of IEEE leaders from Macau; from left to right: Dr. Kong, Dr. Zhang, Dr. Sze,

Saudi Arabia Chapter Expands:
Includes All GCC Sections
Under the leadership of Dr. Bakr Hassan (right) the EdSoc's Saudi Arabia Chapter has
been expanded to include all Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries (Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Bahrain, and the United Arab Emirates). Each GCC
country is also an IEEE Section. Thus the new Gulf EdSoc Chapter contains 7 Sections (Note: Saudi Arabia has two IEEE
Sections both are now part of the new chapter)
The IEEE Saudi Arabia Education Society Chapter has been selected as the 2006 Best Small and Mid-sized Chapter in
IEEE Region 8,
which consists of Europe, Africa and the Middle East. Under the leadership of a number of IEEE and Education Society
leaders in the Middle East met in Bahrain to select board members for the new structure of this GCC-wide chapter. The
plan is to have at least one board member from each of the constituent. At the present time Dr. Bakr Hassan is the
interim Chair, but will soon announce the permanent Executive Committee.
The IEEE Multidisciplinary Engineering Education Magazine (MEEM) is a publication of the IEEE Education
Society. MEEM Editor in Chief, Emmanuel Gonzalez has announced that the December issue is available on line at:
http://www.ewh.ieee.org/soc/e/sac/meem
The IEEE Multidisciplinary Engineering Education Magazine (MEEM) is published quarterly under the IEEE
Education Society Student Activities Committee (EdSocSAC) whose primary objective is to facilitate the publication
of students papers, and also of educators, whose works can influence the scientific preparation of pre-college
students as well as young educators..

EdSoc Membership Development Committee Chair in Iran
"EdSoc's Membership development is functioning very well. We are only of a handful of Societies in IEEE
that are growing in membership over the past few years." —Joseph L.A. Hughes, EdSoc President
Professor Hossein Mousavinezhad (right-hand person in the photo ot the left), EdSoc Membership Development Committee Chair and Van Valkenburg Award
Chair, travelled to India, the United Arab Emirates and Iran in July-August, 2007. In
India he attended the International Conference on Global Software
Development Conference in Coimbatore and delivered a 4-day workshop
on Digital Signal Processing, he also gave a talk in Kerala Section
(for more details see the article in The Interface, November
2007). In
Tehran, Iran, he visited Dr. Hashem Oraee (left in the picture), Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering, Sharif University. Hashem is
very active in IEEE and helped organizing the first IEEE
International Electro/Information Technology Conference in June
2000, Chicago. Dr. Oraee has been a visiting Professor at WPI.
The Nordic Chapter of the IEEE Education Society in cooperation with the Helsinki University of
Technology, Finland, the ReflekTori (an
acronym for Reflection (of course) and "tori"= town square") workshop was arranged at the
university's campus on December 3-4, 2007.
There was incredible attendance; 198 people attended this event. Even more encouraging was the fact that approximately
50% of the attendees were truly young people; graduate students, young professionals, and others.
This turned-out to be a major event for the Nordic Chapter and for Helsinki University.
In the photo above to the left: Education Society Chapter Chair Mats Daniels (left) with Lauri Malme, the Workshop Chair
chat during a break in the program. In the photo above
to the right is Ari Korhonen, a Board Member of the Nordic EdSoc Chapter. All the attendees had great praise for Professor Malme's efforts.
"During the planning stage of this trip, one of our goals was to establish one EdSoc chapter and
build others from that base. But we
had such strong support, it seems that we will have chapters in all the Sections that
we visited!"
--Oliver Ban, Director, EdSoc Chapters Committee China Initiative
There were a large number of professors and students who attended the chapter organizational
meeting during a scheduled visit with IEEE Education Society leaders and students in Tianjin.

Manager Frank Li (right).
The EdSoc's China Development Committee will be actively working with all the
local IEEE leaders, and
future IEEE leaders. We have assisted in EdSoc chapters in Xian, Chengdu, Harbin and Beijing. We are looking forward
to further development in these
new chapters. We have plans to visit all IEEE Section Chairs in China in January 2008 and again in July 2008.
Oliver Ban, Director, EdSoc Chapters
Committee China Initiative states that: "our
only regret was that we could not visit Shanghai, Wuhan and
Nanjing but we will see IEEE leaders in those areas in January and July of 2008!"
"We will returning to various Chinese locations throughout 2008 to work with local leaders to
build the Education Society activities."
In Fall 2007 the chapter members developed a four week E-learning course “Modern Strategies of Corporate
Management in Telecommunications” and launched this October. The course is delivered exclusively through the
Internet using the facilities provided by the DL Centre of the Siberian State University of Telecommunications
and Information Sciences. “Modern Strategies of Corporate Management in Telecommunications” attracted high level
managers from the leading Russian telecommunication operators who are interested in the issues of planning, analysis,
control and accounts in the company and in updating and strengthening their knowledge in corporate management.
In June 2007 the chapter members took part in academic mobility and visited two European partner universities.
These visits were very fruitful. The chapter members took active part in discussing such burning issues as: development of
a new joint Master curriculum in Telecommunication Informatics, difference and convergence of European and Russian training
methodologies, improvement of the international ‘transparency’ and fair academic and professional recognition of
qualifications, the use of ECTS credit system, development of DL and E-learning.
