TAEE 2008 Conference in Spain a huge success
TAEE 2010
Madrid Spain
13-15 April 2010
In the left photo above (from left to right) Jesus Arriaga, (from the Polytechnical University of Madrid Board), Edmundo Tovar (Past-Chair of the Spanish Chapter of the IEEE Education Society), Emilio Olias (Director of the Industrial Engineering School of the Carlos III University of Madrid) and Manuel Castro (Founder of the Spanish Chapter of the IEEE Education Society). The photo above the the right is a group photo of the key people in the TAEE conference.

In 1992, different initiatives inspired by European projects like CTISS (Computer in Teaching Initiative Support Service) were carried out in several Spanish universities. One of these initiatives, already well consolidated, was TAEE (Tecnologías Aplicadas a la Enseñanza de la Electrónica – Technologies Applied to Electronics Teaching). The First Congress was celebrated in 1994 in Madrid, and since then up till now other congresses have been celebrated every two years. These congresses are oriented to Educators related to the Electrical and Electronics areas. In all these congresses there has been an important participation of companies of this sector. The cities of Madrid, Barcelona, Seville, Las Palmas and Valencia, places in which an important electronic industry and prestigious universities exist, have been the sites of the celebrated congresses to date.

In 1998, during the celebration of the III Congress, the participation was opened to the Latin American countries. This situation has been kept in later congresses. The inclusion of Latin American countries was stimulated by the participation of many universities in a program of the European Commission called Alpha. Different participations of previous editions of the congress are included in http://www.euitt.upm.es/taee/congresos_taee/congresos_taee.htm and http://www.euitt.upm.es/taee06/

In general, it is possible to highlight that the average participation has been around 180 professors and the number of accepted communications has been around 120. The participation of Latin American countries has been approximately of 15%. Under the acronym of TAEE, not only congresses have been celebrated but other initiatives directed to the same objective have taken place such as the creation of a “TAEE Resource Centre”. In this Centre there are gathered the different didactic resources that have been presented in the TAEE Congresses or that have been donated by companies or groups of professors. This is a Centre of creation, application, evaluation and diffusion of resources and experiences on the use of the technologies to traditional or distance education. Its objective is the knowledge sharing and the reuse of the educational resources. Further information is in http://www.euitt.upm.es/taee/recursos/Centro_Recursos_TAEE.htm

Summer School in Germany: Wireless Technologies for Remote Engineering
As a joint project of the IEEE Education Society’s Austrian, German and Slovenian Chapters in the first two weeks of July an international summer school was organized.
In the photo above on the left: Assistant Professor Dr. Karsten Henke, Ilmenau University of Technology in Germany during his presentation at the school. In the photo to right: Profesor Matjaz Debevc, a professor at the University of Maribor in Slovenia. Dr. Debevc is also the Chair of the EdSoc's chapter in IEEE-Slovenia; Professor Karsten Henke, Professor Michael Auer who is a faculty member at the University of Applied Sciences in Villach, Austria and he is also the Chair of the EdSoc chapter in IEEE-Austria; Professor Dieter Wuttke from the Ilmenau University of Technology, Germany, Feng-Kuang Chiang, a Doctoral student from Taiwan.

this is a terrific example of cooperation among Education Society leaders.
The two photos above show all the participants at the summer school (left), and show a candid moment during one of the informal supper gatherings.

The summer school is part of a joint master study program in Remote Engineering of four European Universities and is also supported by the European Union and the International Association of Online Engineering (IAOE).

This year the summer school was organized in Germany by the Ilmenau University of Technology under the guidance of Prof. Mitscherlich-Thiel and Dr. Henke. The topic of the taught module was Wireless Technologies.

31 master students and 7 professors from Austria, Germany, India, Pakistan, Romania, Slovenia, Sweden and Syria worked 2 weeks very intensive together in the fields of Wireless Internet (wireless transmission, media access mechanisms, mobility management, wireless transport, quality of Service, security and privacy) and Mobile technologies (GSM and GPRS, introduction to UMTS network architecture, network elements, protocols, service and other aspects).

But they did not only study together, but visited the charming surroundings of Ilmenau, a town which was beloved by the famous German poet Goethe, and places like Erfurt and the mountains around Ilmenau.

This year’s summer school was already the second event in an annual series of summer schools in advanced remote technologies. The third summer school is planned for the next year in Slovenia (University Maribor) and Austria (Carinthia University of Applied Sciences).

For the time after the IAOE plans to organize these summer schools together with the EdSoc as a permanent part of the education of specialists in Online Engineering.

Michael Auer, Matjaz Debevc (Austrian and Slovenian Chapter Chairs) and Andreas Pester (Project Coordinator)

Already four years five European universities (Villach, Ilmenau, Brasov, Maribor and Limerick) are working under the patronage of the IAOE (International Association of Online Engineering) on the development and implementation of a common curriculum in Online Engineering. Online Engineering is one of the very future trends in engineering and science. Due to:

  • the growing complexity of engineering tasks,
  • more and more specialized and expensive equipment as well as software tools and simulators,
  • the necessary use of expensive equipment and software tools/simulators in short time projects,
  • the application of high tech equipment also in SME's,
  • the need of high qualified staff to control recent equipment,
  • the demands of globalization and division of labour.

it is increasingly necessary to allow and organize a shared use of equipment, but also specialized software as for example simulators. These schools aim to provide an intensive training in different Online Technologies like Telerobotics or Wireless Communication Technologies as part of the common curriculum in Online Engineering. Fundamentals, applications and experiences in these fields of remote engineering are mediated by an interdisciplinary approach in combination with "learning by doing" phases. Also the organizers want to promote transnational cooperation and exchanges between students and teachers of European universities, encourage efficient and multinational teaching of special topics of remote engineering and to enable students and teachers from different cultures to work together in multinational groups, so as it will be normal in international development and working teams in remote engineering. It is also an aim of the project to foster multidisciplinary approach, using the different competencies of the participants concerning technology enhanced learning, control engineering, net technologies and robotics.

  IEEE Launches Internet Television
"IEEE.tv is a next-generation member benefit..." IEEE has announced the Beta release of IEEE.tv – an Internet-based broadcasting network that will produce and deliver prerecorded, special-interest programming for engineers and technologists. A collaborative effort of IEEE volunteers, members and staff across the organization, the new service will initially be available only to members only through the myIEEE web portal, but will expand to provide select content intended for the general public in September.
According to Pedro Ray, Vice President of IEEE Regional Activities, “IEEE.tv is a next-generation member benefit that will enable site visitors to view unique video content on a wide range of topics. IEEE.tv will advance IEEE’s commitment to educating the public on important technology and engineering issues.” IEEE.tv will feature original IEEE-produced content within a viewer that may in the future serve as a carrier for non-IEEE productions. The August release includes exclusive programming accessible to members only. In September, general interest programming including those promoting careers in engineering and demonstrating new technology in everyday applications will be available to anyone who visits www.ieee.org/ieeetv. New programs will be added monthly. David Green, Chair of the IEEE.tv Advisory Group, said IEEE.tv will reflect different aspects of the IEEE experience. Programs will be categorized into a number of “series” which will include a variety of different program formats and venues.

“IEEE.tv will dedicate one series to IEEE conference highlights, while another series will consist of interviews with authors who publish books with IEEE,” explained Green. Additional series will cover technology and careers, special events such as IEEE president-elect candidate debates and introductions to new IEEE products.”

“The launch of IEEE.tv is the latest service that adds value to IEEE membership from the convenience of the desktop,” said Ray. In 2005, IEEE launched the members-only web portal “myIEEE,” a one-stop and personalized web area for members to access their benefits and manage their IEEE account. IEEE.tv will be integrated within myIEEE. Ray also sees IEEE.tv as a natural extension of IEEE’s technical community. “IEEE.tv is member-supported, and will offer programming for the members by the members. It is intended to make broadcasting a vibrant and valuable component of the IEEE experience.” IEEE.tv was launched as a pilot program in 2005. The initial programming slate and technical usability of IEEE.tv resulted from feedback from members worldwide representing different technology and engineering disciplines.   IEEE Launches MemberNet Online Directory
The IEEE has launched an online member directory designed to encourage peer-to-peer networking within IEEE membership. memberNet is the first step in a series of next-generation capabilities that will encourage virtual collaborations between members with similar technical interests, regardless of geography.
While the basic member profile in memberNet contains every member's name and membership grade, each member can indicate by check mark what additional information they would like to also have appear. These may include technical interests, local Section, or IEEE Society affiliation. The memberNet directory, and its opt-in management, is accessible from the myIEEE site. Or, visit the memberNet site.
