TUTORIAL 2

NOISE AND SHIELDING

Instructor: Kim Fowler

Wednesday, 22 May 2002, 1.00PM-2.30PM

This tutorial will help you understand electromagnetic noise and how to design circuits and shielding to avoid it. It will present the sources of noise and the mechanisms for noise energy transmission and coupling. These mechanisms include conductive, inductive, capacitive, and electromagnetic couplings. The tutorial will include methods for shielding and filtering noise.

The topics are:
  • Grounding

  • Shielding

  • Electrostatic discharge (ESD)

  • General diagnostics

  • Layout of signal traces

  • Cables

  • Enclosures
