1. Preamble
Throughout the year 2000, Kolkata PE Chapter had organized various technical and educational activities involving members from academia, industries and also many R&D institutions. Student members were also involved in large numbers in all the activities of the Chapter.
2. Lecture Meetings
In the year 2000 altogether 4 lecture meetings have been organized. Several topics of current relevance to the field of Power Engineering were discussed in these lecture meetings. The lecture meetings gave a meaningful forum for wide-ranging interaction between the members from academia, industry and R&D sector.
3. Distinguished Lecturer Program
Power Engineering Chapter jointly with IEEE Calcutta
Section has organized one technical program in 2000 under the aegis of
Distinguished Lecturer Program (DLP) of IEEE Power Engineering Society.
This program was organized as a seminar on ‘Alternate Energy for Next Generation’,
in which Prof. S.K.Sen, Former Vice-Chancellor of Jadavpur University delivered
the keynote address. The IEEE Distinguished Lecture was given by Prof.
Saifur Rahman, Director, Alexandria Research Institute, Virginia Tech,
USA. Large number of IEEE corporate members, student members and other
distinguished persons attended the DLP program.
In this connection, it may be reported that IEEE-Power
Engineering Society has granted an amount of US$ 200.00 towards this DLP
program.
4. Award
Kolkata Power Engineering Chapter recommended the name of Prof. Prasanta K. Mukherjee as the recipient of Chapter Outstanding Engineer Award for the year 2000 and IEEE-PES granted this award to Prof. Prasanta K. Mukherjee.
5. Chapter Website
Kolkata Power Engineering Chapter took one major step
in the forward direction in the year 2000 by hosting its webpages at the
IEEE designated website. The chapter website is fully functional at the
URL – http://www.ewh.ieee.org/soc/pes/calcutta

notice board for regular updates on the activities of Kolkata Power Engineering
Chapter.
6. Membership Information
The membership strength of Power Engineering Chapter of IEEE Calcutta Section remained steady in 2000.
7. IEEE Congress/Meeting
The 2nd IEEE-PES Chapters Congress was held at Seattle,
USA during July 20-22 2000, where Dr. S.Chakravorti, Secretary, Kolkata
Power Engineering Chapter represented the Chapter and took part in
the development of recommendations relating to the specific needs and concerns
Power Engineering Chapters of IEEE, in general, and Region 10, in particular,
for future treatment of the issues.
Considering all the activities of the chapter it may be said that 2000 was a successful year. Power Engineering Chapter extends its warm welcome to more and more colleagues in the field of Power Engineering to come and join IEEE fraternity as members and to provide their valuable advice, special expertise and pleasing company.
