1. Preamble
Throughout the year 2002, Kolkata PE Chapter organized various technical and educational activities involving members from academia, industries and also many R&D institutions. Moreover, it should also be reported here that student members were involved in large numbers in all the activities of the Chapter.
2. Lecture Meetings
Lecture meetings have been organized to provide a suitable
forum for fruitful interaction between the members from academia, industry
and R&D sector. In the year 2002 altogether 4 lecture meetings
had been organized. Several topics of current relevance to the field of
Power Engineering were discussed in these lecture meetings.
3. Distinguished Lecturer Program
Power Engineering Chapter organized a half-day seminar in October 2002 under the aegis of Distinguished Lecturer Program (DLP) of IEEE Power Engineering Society. The speaker of this seminar program on 'VSC Based FACTS Controllers: Modeling and Applications' was Dr. Kalyan K. Sen of Westinghouse, USA. This seminar was held as a part of the educational activity of the chapter.
In December 2002 an Invited talk on "Power for Internet" was organised under the aegis of DLP of IEEE-PES. This talk was delivered by Prof. Saifur Rahman and was held in conjunction with IEEE ACE 2002 as the keynote address. This talk was held as a part of the membership development activity of the chapter.
Large number of IEEE members, student members and other distinguished persons attended
both the DLP programs.
4. Award
Power Engineering Chapter of IEEE Calcutta Section recommended the name of Prof. Sujay Basu (M 07163660) as the recipient of Chapter Outstanding Engineer Award for the year 2002 and IEEE-PES has granted this award to Prof. Sujay Basu.
5. Chapter Website
The chapter website remained fully functional throughout

the online notice board for regular updates on the activities of Kolkata
Power Engineering Chapter.
6. Membership Information
The membership strength of Kolkata Power Engineering Chapter remained steady in 2002.
7. High Performance Chapter Grant
During the year 2002, Kolkata Power Engineering Chapter has been granted the High Performance Chapter award by IEEE-PES for outstanding activities of the chapter in the year 2001.
8. Region 10 Chapter Chairs' Meeting
In
October 2002, the Region 10 PE Chapter Chairs' meeting was held in Yokohoma,
Japan. Sri K. Bhattacharya, PE Kolkata Chapter Chair attended this meeting, in
which several recommendations were made to IEEE-PES which were considered to be
of particular relevance to PE chapters of Region 10.
Considering
all the activities of the chapter it may be said that 2002 was a successful
year. Power Engineering Chapter extends its warm welcome to more and more
colleagues in the field of Power Engineering to come and join IEEE fraternity
as members and to provide their valuable advice, special expertise and
pleasing company.
