1. Preamble
Throughout the year 2003, Kolkata PE Chapter organized various technical and educational and other developmental activities involving members from academia, industries and also many R&D institutions. Moreover, it should also be reported here that student members were involved in large numbers in all the activities of the Chapter.
2. Lecture Meetings
Lecture meetings have been organized to provide a suitable forum for fruitful interaction between the members from academia, industry and R&D sector. In the year 2003 altogether 6 lecture meetings had been organized. Several topics of current relevance to the field of Power Engineering were discussed in these lecture meetings.

4. Seminar
Kolkata Power Engineering Chapter organized the all India Seminar on "Integrated Operation of Power System" jointly with the Electrical Engineering Division, West Bengal State Center of the Institution of Engineers (India) on September 6-7, 2003 in Sir R.N. Mukherjee Hall of the Institution of Engineers (India), 8, Gokhale Road, Kolkata 700 020. The detailed report is available online at the chapter website.

Educational Activities
Kolkata Power Engineering Chapter organized the following programs in the year 2003.
a)
A workshop on ‘Impact of Electricity Privatization on the Existing
Electric Power Systems’ was organized jointly by IEEE Calcutta Section and its
Power Engineering Chapter on December 19, 2003 in the seminar room of Electrical
Engineering Department of Jadavpur University. This program was organized under
the aegis of Distinguished Lecturer Program of IEEE-PES. The speaker in this
workshop was IEEE-DL Prof. M.Shahidehpour of Illinois Institute of Technology,
Chicago, USA.
b)
A one-day tutorial on
'Wavelet Transform and Fractal Analysis in Pattern Recognition' was organized
jointly by IEEE Calcutta Section and its Power Engineering Chapter on 6th
November 2003 in the Regency Ballroom of Hyatt Regency, Kolkata.
c) A half-day seminar on ‘Power System Problems in Jharkhand’ was organized in Collaboration with the student Branch of BIT Mesra (DU) on September 13, 2003 at the BIT Mesra(DU).
d) An educational program on ‘Computer Networks and Power Systems’ was organized on September 15, 2003 at the Asansol Engineering College, Kanyapur, Asansol.
e) A tutorial program ‘Application of Soft-computing Techniques in Power Systems’ was organized on September 20, 2003 at Jadavpur University.

6.
Membership
Development Programs
The following initiatives were taken by the Kolkata PE Chapter in the year 2003:
a)
The Executive Committee of the Power Engineering Chapter resolved to
honor Prof. Srikumar Mallik (SM02629475) of BE College(DU), Shibpur, Howrah in
the year 2003 by presenting him with a certificate for his significant
contribution in the growth and sustenance of the chapter.
b) The Chapter nominated three of its members for elevation to Senior Member grade in 2003. The nominated members are i) Prof. Srikumar Mallik (M 02629475), ii) Dr. Debasis Sarkar (M 01435528) and iii) Dr. Kesab Bhattacharya (M 40118117). All three of them have been duly elevated to the grade of Senior Member in the year 2003.
c) As a drive to increase the PE Chapter membership, the Executive Committee of Power Engineering Chapter has decided to give 50% of PE society dues as subsidy for new membership to PE society during the year 2003. Three young engineers who have recently entered the power engineering profession as faculty members of Bhadrak Institute of Engineering & Technology, Bhadrak, Orissa, India, have availed this facility in 2003, viz. i) Mr. C.K.Panigrahi, ii) Mr. A.P.Nayak and iii) Mr. M.Pilot, to become new members of Power Engineering Society of IEEE.
7.
Student Activities
The following programs were organized by the Kolkata PE Chapter in the year 2003:
a)
A Web-content development contest for IEEE student
members attached to IEEE Calcutta Section was held in the year 2003. Out of the several entries, which were judged by a
panel of experts, the content developed by Sri Sujoy Mukherjee (S41553452) has
been awarded the certificate of merit for the best entry.
b)
A group discussion on "Power Engineering: No
longer attractive to the students" was organized for students on 22nd July
2003 at 2pm at Jadavpur University, Kolkata.
c)
A technical visit to the 220kV Substation of West
Bengal State Electricity Board located at Kasba near Kolkata was organized for
students on 29th July 2003.
d)
A program for the students was organized on 2nd
September 2003 at 3-30pm at Jadavpur University, Kolkata. In this program
technical presentations were made by 12 students on various issues that are
relevant to power engineering in general.
e)
A program was organized jointly by the IEEE
Calcutta Section and its Power Engineering Chapter for the promotion of student
membership at the National Institute of Science and Technology (NIST), Berhampur,
Orissa on 8th September 2003.
f) IEEE Power Engineering Society has developed two videos to help students to learn more about power engineering careers. In an effort to disseminate this information, the Chapter organized a video show for students on November 21, 2003 at 4pm in the High Voltage Laboratory of Jadavpur University. In this video show two titles were shown.

Public Affairs Activities
The following programs were organized by the Kolkata PE Chapter in the year 2003:
a) A one-Day Workshop on 'Current Trends in Technical Education In India' has been organized by the Chapter on 22nd November 2003 in Collaboration with the Humboldt Club Calcutta and Max Mueller Bhavan Kolkata.
b) A lecture meeting was organized on 26th August 2003 at 4pm in Kolkata, in which Mr. Anirban Basu of University of California, Santa Barbara, USA, spoke on 'Career Opportunities for Engineering Students in the Changed Global Scenario'.
c) A lecture meeting was organized on 23rd September 2003 at 4pm in Room no. HV-3-1 of High Tension Laboratory of Electrical Engineering Department of Jadavpur University, Kolkata. Mr. P.K.Chattopadhyay of Bharat Bijlee Ltd delivered a talk on 'Communication Skill-A Key to Success in Professional Life' in this program.
9. Award
Kolkata Power Engineering Chapter recommended the name of Prof. Nirmalendu Chatterjee (SM 03854999), an eminent academician and power engineer attached to this chapter, as the recipient of Chapter Outstanding Engineer award for the year 2003 and IEEE-PES have granted this award to Prof. Nirmalendu Chatterjee.

12. High Performance Chapter Grant
During the year 2003, Kolkata Power Engineering Chapter has been granted the High Performance Chapter award (US$ 800.00) by IEEE-PES for outstanding activities of the chapter in the year 2002.
Considering
all the activities of the chapter it may be said that 2003 was a successful
year. Power Engineering Chapter extends its warm welcome to more and more
colleagues in the field of Power Engineering to come and join IEEE fraternity
as members and to provide their valuable advice, special expertise and
pleasing company.
