Annual Report for the year 2004

1. Preamble

During the year 2004, Kolkata  PE Chapter organized various technical and educational and other developmental activities. All these programs gave  members from academia, industries and R&D organizations suitable platform for mutual interactions. Moreover, it should also be reported here that student members were involved in large numbers in all the activities of the Chapter.

2. Lecture Meetings

Lecture meetings have been organized to discuss topics of current relevance to the field of Power Engineering.  In the year 2004 altogether 3 lecture meetings had been organized. The details of the lecture meetings are available online at the chapter website.

3.  Administrative Meetings

4 meetings of the Executive Committee of the Chapter were held during 2004 to discuss about the organizational matters as well as to discuss the action plan of the chapter.

4. Seminar

Kolkata Power Engineering Chapter organized a Seminar talk on "Recent Developments in FACTS Technology" jointly with the West bengal State Electricity Board on October 18, 2004 in Seminar Hall-1 of WBSEB at the Vidyut Bhavan, Kolkata 700 091. This program was organized under the aegis of Distinguished Lecturer Program of IEEE-PES. The detailed report is available online at the chapter website.

5.  Educational Activities

Kolkata Power Engineering Chapter organized the following programs in the year 2004.

a)  An educational program on ‘Digital Library Networks’ was organized in collaboration with the Electrical Engineering Department of Jadavpur University on January 05, 2004 in the seminar room of Electrical Engineering Department of Jadavpur University. The speaker in this educational program was Prof. Saifur Rahman of ARI, Virginia Tech, USA.

b)  A round table discussion on 'Emerging Trends in Illumination Engineering' was organized jointly with the Electrical Engineering Department of Jadavpur University on 22nd December 2004 in the Photometry Laboratory of EE Dept, JU.

6.  Membership Development Programs

 

The following initiatives were taken by the Kolkata PE Chapter in the year 2004:

a)  The Executive Committee of the Power Engineering Chapter resolved to honor Prof. Debasis Sarkar (SM01435528) of BESU, Shibpur, Howrah in the year 2004 by presenting him with a certificate for his significant contribution in the growth and sustenance of the chapter.

b)  The Chapter nominated one of its members for elevation to Senior Member grade in 2004. The nominated member was Dr. Dipak Ray (M 00244459). Dr. Ray has been duly elevated to the grade of Senior Member in the year 2004.

7.   Student Activities

The following programs were organized by the Kolkata PE Chapter in the year 2004:

a)  A tutorial program on "Simulation Techniques in High Voltage Engineering" was organized on January 27, 2004 in the High Voltage Laboratory of Jadavpur University. The tutorial was conducted by Mr. Saibal Chatterjee of NERIST. 18 students participated in this tutorial program.

b)  A program was organized jointly by IEEE Calcutta Section and its Power Engineering Chapter for the promotion of student membership at the Heritage Institute of Technology, Kolkata on 13th April 2004. Prof. S.Chakravorti, Chair, Power Engineering Chapter, Dr. S.K.Sanyal, Vice-Chair, IEEE Calcutta Section and Prof. K.K.Mallik, EAC Chair, IEEE Calcutta Section took part in this program. At the outset Prof. Chakravorti made a presentation on the IEEE activities in general, which was followed by a technical lecture on "Features of TTL Logic Gates" by Dr. Sanyal. An interactive session on "Why a students should become an IEEE Member?" was held thereafter in which Prof. Mallik made a presentation on the student activities of IEEE and the benefits of IEEE membership to the students in particular. More than 45 students and several faculty members of HIT participated in this program.

8. Award

Kolkata Power Engineering Chapter recommended the name of Dr. Dipak Ray (SM 00244459), an eminent power engineer attached to this chapter, as the recipient of Chapter Outstanding Engineer award for the year 2004 and IEEE-PES have granted this award to Dr. Dipak Ray.

9.      PES GOLD Program

As a part of the chapter PES GOLD program, a GOLD member Dr. Prithwiraj Purkait (M 41260885) has been kept as the Treasurer of the chapter. A lecture meeting was also organized on 18.12.2004 in which Mr. Chiranjib Koley (an IEEE GOLD member) of Haldia Institute of Technology delivered a talk on 'Application of SVM in High Voltage Engineering' in the Seminar Hall of High Voltage Laboratory of Jadavpur University.

10. Chapter Website

The chapter website remained fully functional throughout the year 2004 at the URL –  http://www.ewh.ieee.org/soc/pes/calcutta

11. Outstanding Small Chapter Award

During the year 2004, Kolkata Power Engineering Chapter has been awarded the Outstanding Small Chapter Award by IEEE-PES for extra-ordinary activities of the chapter in the year 2003. It carried a cash award of US$ 1000.00 and a special banner for the chapter along with  plaques for the office bearers. Dr. S.Chakravorti, Chair, PE Kolkata Chapter, received this award on behalf of the chapter during the IEEE PES Annual Meeting held in Denver, USA in June, 2004.

12. High Performance Chapter Grant

During the year 2004, Kolkata Power Engineering Chapter has also been granted the High Performance Chapter award (US$ 1000.00) by IEEE-PES for outstanding activities of the chapter in the year 2003.

        Considering all the activities it may be said that 2004 was a special year for the chapter . Power Engineering Chapter extends its warm welcome to more and more colleagues in the field of Power Engineering to come and join IEEE fraternity as members and to provide their valuable advice, special expertise and pleasing company.
