Annual Report for the year 2005

1. Preamble

During the year 2005, Kolkata  PE Chapter organized various technical and educational and other developmental activities. All these programs gave  members from academia, industries and R&D organizations suitable platform for mutual interactions. Moreover, it should also be reported here that student members were involved in large numbers in all the activities of the Chapter.

2. Lecture Meetings

Lecture meetings have been organized to discuss topics of current relevance to the field of Power Engineering.  In the year 2005 altogether 2 lecture meetings had been organized. The details of the lecture meetings are available online at the chapter website.

3.  Administrative Meetings

3 meetings of the Executive Committee of the Chapter were held during 2005 to discuss about the organizational matters as well as to discuss the action plan of the chapter.

4. Seminar

In the year 2005, Kolkata Power Engineering Chapter organized the following seminar/workshop programs. The detailed reports are available online at the chapter website.

a) National Seminar on "Advancements in Condition Monitoring of Large Electrical Equipments" jointly with the Electrical Engineering Department of Haldia Institute of Technology on March 19, 2005 at The Ffort Radisson, Raichak. .

b) Workshop on "Gas Insulated Systems" jointly with the Electrical Engineering Department of Haldia Institute of Technology on August 03, 2005 in the H.L.Roy Hall, The Institute of Chemical Engineers, JU Campus, Kolkata under the aegis of distinguished lecturer program of IEEE-PES.

c) Workshop on "Polymeric Insulation for High Voltage Application With Special Reference to Nano-Technology" jointly with the IEEE Calcutta Section on December 02, 2005 in the Hotel Peerless Inn, Kolkata.

d) National Seminar on "Power Sector Restructuring and Deregulation" jointly with the Electrical Engineering Department of Haldia Institute of Technology, IEEE Kharagpur Section and University College of Technology of University of Calcutta on December 04, 2005 at the Indian Oil Management Academy, Haldia.

5.  Educational Activities

Kolkata Power Engineering Chapter organized the following programs in the year 2005.

a)  An educational program on "Simulation of Power System Faults using Matlab" on February 22, 2005 in the Seminar Room, High Tension Laboratory of Jadavpur University, Kolkata. The speaker in this educational program was Mr. Saibal Chatterjee of NERIST.

b)  Workshop on 'Modelling and Analysis of Large Electrical Machines' was organized jointly with the Electrical Engineering Department of Jadavpur University on 19th August 2005 in the Seminar Room of Electrical Engineering Department of Jadavpur University, Kolkata.

c) Seminar Talk on 'Recent Developments in FACTS Technology' on 7th October 2005 in the Seminar Room of High Tension Laboratory of Electrical Engineering Department of Jadavpur University, Kolkata. This talk was organized under the aegis of IEEE-PES Distinguished Lecturer program.

6.  Membership Development Programs

 

The following initiatives were taken by the Kolkata PE Chapter in the year 2005:

a)  The Executive Committee of the Power Engineering Chapter resolved to honor Mr. Sanjay Kar Chowdhury (M40298723) of CESC Ltd, Kolkata, in the year 2005 by presenting him with a certificate for his significant contribution in the growth and sustenance of the chapter. Mr. Sunil Mitra, IAS, Principal Secretary, Dept. of Power & NES, Govt. of West Bengal, presented the certificate to Mr. Sanjay Kar Chowdhury on December 04, 2005.

b)  The Chapter nominated one of its members for elevation to Senior Member grade in 2005. The nominated member was Prof. Prafulla C Panda (M41485403). Prof. Panda has been duly elevated to the grade of Senior Member in the year 2005.

7.   Student Activities

The following program was organized by the Kolkata PE Chapter in the year 2005:

a)  Technical visit to the 132kV Gas Insulated Substation of CESC Ltd located at Park Lane in Kolkata was organized for students on 22nd November 2005. 16 students took part in this visit and they were accompanied by Chapter Chair, Prof. Sivaji Chakravorti, Chapter Secretary, Prof. Kesab Bhattacharya and Chapter Execom Member, Mr. Sanjay Kar Chowdhury.

8. Award

Kolkata Power Engineering Chapter recommended the name of Prof. Kesab Bhattacharya (SM 40118117), an eminent power engineering educator attached to this chapter, as the recipient of Chapter Outstanding Engineer award for the year 2005 and IEEE-PES have granted this award to Prof. Kesab Bhattacharya.

9.      PES GOLD Program

As a part of the chapter PES GOLD program, a GOLD member Dr. Prithwiraj Purkait (M 41260885) has been kept as the Treasurer of the chapter.

10. Chapter Website

The chapter website remained fully functional throughout the year 2005 at the URL –  http://www.ewh.ieee.org/soc/pes/calcutta
Members and interested persons are requested to visit the online notice board for regular updates on the activities of Kolkata Power Engineering Chapter.

11. High Performance Chapter Grant

During the year 2005, Kolkata Power Engineering Chapter has also been granted the High Performance Chapter award (US$ 700.00) by IEEE-PES for outstanding activities of the chapter in the year 2004.

12. Chapter Membership Strength

During the year 2005, the membership of Kolkata PE Chapter increased by 20%. The Chapter membership was 35 in the end of 2004 and  in the end of the year 2005 it is now 42.

13. Region 10 Chapters’ Meeting

The Region 10 Chapters’ meeting was held in Bangkok from 18-20 December 2005. Prof. S. Chakravorti, PE Kolkata Chapter Chair represented the chapter in this meeting.

        Considering all the activities it may be stated that 2005 was an eventful year for the chapter . Power Engineering Chapter extends its warm welcome to more and more colleagues in the field of Power Engineering to come and join IEEE fraternity as members and to provide their valuable advice, special expertise and pleasing company.
