1. Preamble
During the year 2006, Kolkata PE Chapter organized various technical and educational and other developmental activities. All these programs gave members from academia, industries and R&D organizations suitable platform for mutual interactions. Moreover, it should also be reported here that student members were involved in large numbers in all the activities of the Chapter.
2. Lecture Meetings
Lecture meetings have been organized to discuss topics of current relevance to the field of Power Engineering. In the year 2006 altogether 2 technical lectures had been organized. The details of the lecture meetings are available online at the chapter website.

In the year 2006, Kolkata Power Engineering Chapter organized the following seminar/workshop programs. The detailed reports are available online at the chapter website.
a) National Seminar on "Intelligent Tools In Electrical Systems" jointly with the Electrical Engineering Department of Jadavpur University on March 22, 2006 at The K.P. Basu Memorial Hall, Jadavpur University, Kolkata.
b) National Conference on "Soft-Computing and Machine Learning for Signal Processing, Control, Power and Telecommunications" jointly with the College of Engineering Bhubaneswar on March 24, 2006 in the Hotel New Marrion, Bhubaneswar, Orissa.
c) Conference on "Emerging Trends in Electrical Engineering (ETET-2006)" jointly with the B.P.Poddar Institute of Management & Technology, Kolkata on September 02, 2006 in the Seminar Hall, B.P.Poddar Institute of Management & Technology, Kolkata.
5. PES Distinguished Lecturer Program
Seminar on "Power Quality (SPQ-2006)" jointly with the Industry Applications Chapter, Kolkata, on 23rd December 2006 in the Seminar Room of Electrical Engineering Department of Jadavpur University. Prof. Bhim Singh, IEEE PES DL, delivered the PES DL talk.

Educational Activities
Kolkata Power Engineering Chapter organized the following programs in the year 2006.
a)
Short-Term Course on ‘Advanced Computing Techniques in Electrical Engineering’ jointly with the Electrical Engineering Department of Jadavpur University on July 03-08, 2006 in the Electrical Engineering Department of Jadavpur University, Kolkata.

Membership
Development Programs
The following initiatives were taken by the Kolkata PE Chapter in the year 2006:
a)
The Executive Committee of the Power Engineering Chapter resolved to honor Dr. Prithwiraj Purkait (M41260885) in the year 2006 by presenting him a certificate for his significant contribution in the growth and sustenance of the chapter.
b) Power Engineering Chapter nominated the following members for elevation to Senior Member grade in 2006 - i) Prof. Sujay Basu (M 07163660) and ii) Dr. Suparna Kar Chowdhury (M 85010307). Both Prof. Basu and Dr. Kar Chowdhury have been duly elevated to the grade of Senior Member in the year 2006.

Student Activities
The following program was organized by the Kolkata PE Chapter in the year 2006:
a)
Lecture Meeting on April 18, 2006 for the students in which 26 students participated. Dr. Abhisek Ukil, Tshwane University of Technology, Pretoria, South Africa, delivered the lecture.
9. Award
Prof. Srikumar Mallik (SM 02629475), Professor of Electrical Engineering of Bengal Engineering & Science University, an eminent Power Engineering Educator attached to this chapter, had been nominated by the chapter for the Outstanding Chapter Engineer award, which had been duly accepted by IEEE PES.

12. High Performance Chapter Grant
During the year 2006, Kolkata Power Engineering Chapter has also been granted the High Performance Chapter award (US$ 800.00) by IEEE-PES for outstanding activities of the chapter in the year 2005.
13. Chapter Membership Strength
During the year 2006, the membership of Kolkata PE Chapter did not increase much. The Chapter membership was 42 in the end of 2005 and in the end of the year 2006 it is now 41.
Considering all the activities it may be stated that 2006 was an eventful year for the chapter . Power Engineering Chapter extends its warm welcome to more and more colleagues in the field of Power Engineering to come and join IEEE fraternity as members and to provide their valuable advice, special expertise and pleasing company.
