Speaker : Dr. Kalyan K. Sen
With active participation of West Bengal State Electricity Board, the seminar talk was organized at the seminar hall of WBSEB at its headquarters at Vidyut Bhavan. The seminar talk started at 3pm. At the outset Mr. D.K.Ganguly, Member(Operations) of WBSEB, welcomed the participants. He also extended a warm welcome to IEEE DL Dr. Kalyan K Sen. Thereafter Prof. Sivaji Chakravorti, Chair, IEEE PE Kolkata Chapter, introduced the speaker to the participants. He also explained the IEEE Distinguished Lecturer Program (DLP) to the audience.Dr. Kalyan K Sen, who is working in the field of power controllers and FACTS for over a decade started with the definition of FACTS and then went on to explain the basics of power controlling techniques with particular reference to VSC based technology. The IEEE DL then presented the principles of STATic synchronous COMpensators (STATCOM), Static Synchronous Series Compensator (SSSC) and Unified Power Flow Controller (UPFC). Another interesting area covered by Dr. Sen was practical solutions to Voltage Flicker and Voltage Sag problems. In this respect he put forward the application of Dynamic Voltage Restorer ( DVR) for voltage sag corrections. These aspects were elaborately explained with the help of a practical electric furnace example. Back-to-Back STATCOM and also Back-to-Back SSSC were ideas that evoked a lot interest among the audience. Finally Dr. Sen introduced the "Sen Transformers" as power controllers and concluded with a comparison between the "Sen Transformer" and UPFC. Mr. M.K.Roy, Member (Commercial) of WBSEB proposed the vote of thanks. The program concluded at about 5:00pm. About 30 practicing engineers from power utilities and members of Kolkata PE Chapter took part in this program.
