Report on One-day Tutorial on 'Numerical Protection'

Organised by Power Engineering Chapter of
 IEEE Calcutta Section

under the aegis of DLP of IEEE-PES

Date:     November 19, 2001
Venue:  HLRoy Auditorium, IIChE, JU Campus

Instructor:  Prof. M.S.Sachdev

It was an engrossing day listening to Prof. Sachdev speaking on state-of-the-art principles and applications of power system protection. The idea behind organizing this program was to refresh the knowledge of a subject which is ever-important for power engineers as well a subject which is an amalgamation of electrical, electronics and computer engineering. In the process, the participants were offered the knowledge and wisdom of a person who has spent more than 40 years in this area both as a teacher as well as a practicing engineer. Another major objective of this program was to bring together members of academia and the power engineers from the industry. The response was very encouraging as there were sponsored participants from ABB Ltd, West Bengal State Electricity Board, West Bengal Power Development Corporation Limited, CESC Ltd and M.N.Dastur & Co. Ltd. Participants came from academic institutions like Bengal Engineering College (DU), Haldia Institute of Technology, College of Engineering and Management Kolaghat, Birla Institute of Technology Mesra and also from Jadavpur University. The total number of registered participants was 48 including 4 student participants.

After the welcome coffee, Prof. N.Chatterjee, IEEE Calcutta Section Chair, started the program at 10:00am. He introduced the Instructor by dwelling upon the illustrious career of Prof. Sachdev. The entire program was divided into three sessions, one before lunch and two after lunch with a tea break in between. Beginning with the basics of protection philosophy, Prof. Sachdev went on to describe the details of present day status of numerical protection along with all the nitty-gritty involved in it. In the end he also spoke about the future trends as well as the standards that are in vogue and also those, which are urgently needed in near future. The lecture generated immense enthusiasm among the participants, which was evident from the involved discussions, which ensued following every session. Dr. S.Chakravorti, Secretary, Power Engineering Chapter proposed the vote of thanks. The tutorial concluded at about 05:30pm.

Considering all the aspects of the program, it may be stated with emphasis that the tutorial was a success and the objectives of the program were achieved.
