At the outset Prof. D.K.Basu, President of the Humboldt Club Calcutta welcomed all the participants of the workshop program. Prof. P.K.Mukherjee of Indian Association for the Cultivation of Science in Kolkata, Convenor of the workshop program, explained the backdrop against which this workshop was organized. The workshop was inaugurated by Dr. Martin Waelde, Director, Max Mueller Bhavan Kolkata and the Guest of Honour was Mr. Ernst Schwering, Hon'ble Vice Consul, Consulate of the Federal Republic of Germany in Kolkata. Prof. S.Chakravorti, Chairman of Power Engineering Chapter proposed the vote of thanks.
The entire workshop program was divided into two sessions. The first session was chaired by Prof. Sisir K Sen, former Dean of IIT-Kharagpur. The key note address was given by Prof. Ashok K. Barua, Padmasree, former Director of Indian Association for the Cultivation of Science in Kolkata on “Technical Education for the Promotion of Renewable Energy Sources in India”. There were three talks in the first session as follows: i) "Technical Education in India - Retrospect and Prospect" by Mr. Alok Bhattacharya, General Manager, CMC Ltd, ii) “Growth of Technical Education in India – Some Observations” by Prof. Ajit K. Chattopadhyay, FIEEE, UGC Emeritus Fellow, Electrical Engg Dept, BE College (DU), Howrah and iii) “Action Plan for Development of Technical Education System in the Present Perspective with Special Emphasis to Higher Technical Education of the Country” by Dr. Amalendu Basu, Director of Technical Education, Govt. of West Bengal.
The second session was chaired by Prof. P.N. Ghosh, Dean, Faculty of Science, University of Calcutta. In this session also there were three lectures as detailed below: i) “Challenges to Technical Education in India in the Changing Scenario” by Mr. Amitabha Roy Choudhuri, Former Director (Technical), DVC & Former Member (Technical), WBSEB, ii) "Engineering Education in India - Vision 2020" by Prof. Manoj K. Mitra, Dean, Faculty of Engineering and Technology, Jadavpur University and iii) “Genesis, Present Scenario and Functions of Private Engineering Degree Colleges in West Bengal” by Prof. M.K.Mukherjee, Director (Academic), Institute of Engineering and Management, Kolkata.
There were more than 40 participants in this workshop program from various educational institutes, industries and research organizations.
