Report on the Workshop on

'Polymeric Insulation for High Voltage Application With Special Reference to Nano-Technology'

Organized by Kolkata Power Engineering Chapter

jointly with the IEEE Calcutta Section

 Date:     December 02, 2005
Venue: Hall Bichitra, Hotel Peerless Inn, Kolkata

Speaker :  Dr. R. Sarathi

This workshop was organized to get acquainted with the recent developments in the field of polymeric insulation as applied to high voltage systems. A leading personality in this field of research Dr. R.Sarathi from IIT Madras, Chennai, delivered the talk.

At the outset Prof. S.Chakravorti, Chair of IEEE PE Chapter, Kolkata, welcomed the participants and spoke about the objectives of the program. Prof. Chakravorti stressed on the need of disseminating knowledge on latest developments in insulation technology and highlighted the importance of dielectric materials keeping in view the recent advances made in the area of application of nano-technology in dielectric engineering.

In his lucid talk, Dr R.Sarathi discussed various aspects of developments in insulation Technology, particularly the advances made in the area of polymeric insulation. Dr. Sarathi discussed in details the merits and demerits of various types of polymeric insulation. He then outlined the benefits of the use of nano-technology in achieving better dielectric properties of polymeric insulation and showed some interesting experimental results in this field. Dr. Sarathi also answered a large number of questions that were put forward to him. In the end, mementos were presented  to Dr. R.Sarathi on behalf of the organizers. The program ended with a formal vote of thanks offered by Prof. K. Bhattacharya.

There were about 95 participants in this workshop from academic institutions, power utilities as well as other industries. It was an interesting and interactive program that succeeded in broadening the knowledge of all those who were present in this workshop.
