Speaker : Dr. Hermann Koch
This workshop was organized to get valuable knowledge on an advanced topic like Gas Insulated System from somebody who has spent a long time in this area, namely Dr. Hermann Koch from Siemens AG, Erlangen, Germany. In the inaugural session of the workshop Prof. N.Chatterjee, Former Chair of IEEE PE Chapter, Kolkata, welcomed the participants and spoke about the objectives of the workshop. Prof. S.Choudhuri, Former President of The Institute of Engineers (India), delivered the key note address wherein he stressed on the need of disseminating knowledge on latest developments in power engineering and highlighted the importance of GIS keeping in view the environmental aspects. Prof. S.Basu, Former Director of School of Energy Studies, Jadavpur University, who chaired the inaugural session, formally inaugurated the workshop by lighting the ceremonial lamp. Prof. S.Chakravorti, Chair, IEEE PE Kolkata Chapter, introduced the eminent speaker. Mr. Sanjay Kar Chowdhury, Convenor of the workshop, conducted the proceedings of the inaugural session.
The one day workshop was divided into two sessions. The pre-lunch session covered various aspects of Gas Insulated Substation. IEEE PES DL Dr. Koch talked in details on the design, fabrication, installation, testing and monitoring of such systems. The post lunch session was further divided into two parts. The first part was on Gas Insulated Transmission Lines. In this talk Dr. Koch elaborated the advantages of GIL over the conventional cables. The differences of Gas Insulated Substations and Gas Insulated Lines were also clearly discussed. In the second part Dr. Koch spoke on SF6 as an insulating media highlighting its characteristics vis-a-vis its global warming potential and how to minimize GWP through proper recycling of this greenhouse gas. Interesting videos were also shown by Dr. Koch on relevant topics. In both the sessions lively question-answers followed the talks. In the end, Prof. S.Chakravorti, Chair, IEEE PE Kolkata Chapter, presented mementos to Dr. Koch on behalf of the chapter. Prof. K.Bhattacharya, Secretary, IEEE PE Kolkata Chapter, gave the formal vote of thanks.
There were 78 participants in this workshop from academic institutions like Jadavpur University, Bengal Engineering and Science University, Haldia Institute of Technology, College of Engineering and Management Kolaghat, Techno India, Calcutta Institute of Engineering and Management, Meghnad Saha Institute of Technology, Asansol Engineering College etc, from power utilities like West Bengal State Electricity Board, CESC Ltd etc, power industries like Alsthom, Andrew Yule, Siemens etc. It was an interesting and knowledge enhancing experience for all those who were present in this workshop.
