This talk was organized to get acquainted with the recent developments in the field of FACTS devices as applied to large power systems. A leading personality in this field of research Dr. Kalyan Sen from Curtiss-Wright Electro-Mechanical Corporation (formerly Westinghouse), USA, delivered the IEEE PES DL talk.

       At the outset Prof. S.Chakravorti, Chair of IEEE PE Chapter, Kolkata, welcomed the participants and spoke about the objectives of the program. Prof. Chakravorti stressed on the need of disseminating knowledge on latest developments in power engineering and highlighted the importance of FACTS devices keeping in view the power flow control aspects. Prof. Chakravorti also introduced the IEEE Distinguished Lecturer to the august gathering.

       In his illuminating talk, Dr Kalyan Sen discussed various aspects of Recent Developments in Facts Technology, viz. Voltage Sourced Converters, VSC based Technology, VSC based FACTS Controllers, Special Applications and Future Directions. Dr. Sen also answered a large number of questions that were put forward to him. In the end Prof. S.Chakravorti presented a memento to Dr. Kalyan Sen. The program ended with a formal vote of thanks offered by Prof. S.Chakravorti.

      There were about 25 participants in this workshop from academic institutions, power utilities as well as power industries. It was an interesting and interactive program that succeeded in enhancing knowledge of all those who were present in this IEEE DL talk.
