Report on the Workshop on

'Modelling and Analysis of Large Electrical Machines'

Organised jointly by Power Engineering Chapter of IEEE Calcutta Section and Electrical Engineering Department of Jadavpur University

Date:     August 19, 2005
Venue:  Seminar Room, Electrical Engg. Dept., JU.

In the inaugural session of the workshop program, Prof. T.K.Basak, Head of Electrical Engineering Department of Jadavpur University welcomed all the participants and outlined the relevance of the workshop. The inaugural address was given by Prof. M.K.Mitra, Dean of Faculty of Engineering & Technology of Jadavpur University. In his speech Prof. Mitra discussed the importance of modelling and simulation not only for academic purposes but also from the point of view of a professional engineer.   Prof. Mitra also highlighted the Technical Education Quality Improvement Program (TEQIP), a GOI-WB sponsored program, under the auspices of which this workshop is being organized with a view to give fruitful inputs towards curriculum development. Dr. Mita Datta, convenor of the workshop, proposed the vote of thanks in the end of the inaugural session.

In the technical session, at first Dr. B.Pal of Imperial College London  delivered a talk titled 'Modelling and Analysis of Variable Speed Wind Energy Conversion Systems (WECS) for Grid Operation'. His talk was divided into four parts, viz. Background and basic concepts, Analytical description of WECS with Doubly Fed Induction Generator (DFIG), Small signal stability of WECS with DFIG and Other issues and future.

The second talk was delivered by Dr. B.P.Singh of BHEL R&D, Hyderabad. The title of his talk was 'Impulse Voltage Distribution and Transient Current in Power Transformers'.  Dr. Singh discussed in details the following topics: Type and Configuration of Power Transformer Windings, Calculation of Inductive and Capacitive Parameters, Theory of Impulse Voltage Distribution in the Windings and Calculation of Neutral Current in Transformers.

In the concluding session Dr. Mita Datta presented mementos to the speakers. The workshop ended with the formal vote of thanks given by  Prof. K.Bhattacharya, Secretary of Power Engineering Chapter. There were more than 50 registered participants in this workshop program from educational institutions,  power utilities and industries. There were also about 15 student participants.
