Globally significant amount of stress is given on renewable energy as well as distributed generation to cater to the ever-increasing demand of electrical power. Keeping this aspect in view, Kolkata Power Engineering Chapter organized this seminar under the aegis of the distinguished lecturer program of IEEE-PES. Prof. Saifur Rahman, Director of Advanced Research Institute, Virginia Tech, USA and IEEE PES DL delivered the lecture.
Prof. Sivaji Chakravorti, Former Chair, Power Engineering Chapter of IEEE Calcutta Section, extended hearty welcome to all the speakers and participants of the workshop. Prof. Chakravorti also introduced the distinguished speaker to the audience.
Prof. Rahman in his elaborate speech touched upon the issue of transition from today's central station to tomorrow's distributed utility. He spoke in details on the distributed generation technologies like Solar energy systems (both solar photovoltaic and solar thermal systems), Wind energy systems, Wave energy systems, Geothermal power plants and Fuel cell power plants. In his talk Prof. Rahman highlighted the strengths and weaknesses of each system. Finally he also stresses on the need to go for efficient lightning system for energy savings.
Mr. Sanjay Kar Chowdhury, Secretary, Power Engineering Chapter of IEEE Calcutta Section, proposed the vote of thanks.
There were altogether 63 participants in this seminar, a large section of which was from the power utilities.
