saifur rahmanI have been impressed with the vision, hard work and outreach that the leadership of the IEEE PES Kolkata Chapter has shown over the last ten years since I have been visiting this chapter and making presentations. They have provided a platform where they are able to attract members from the government, industry, academia and the press to participate in their programs over the years. I hope this PES chapter will be able to maintain this broad based approach in the next decade.

Best wishes, Saifur Rahman

Prof. Sivaji Chakravorti

Past Chairman, IEEE Power & Energy Kolkata Chapter, and Professor, Electrical Engineering Department, Jadavpur University

sivaji chakravorti There is no doubt that the power industry is at a critical point, facing numerous challenges like an increasing population, demands for higher living standards, and a pressing need to reduce pollution. Furthermore, it is imperative to avert global warming and to change the energy mix away from fossil fuels with expanded development in renewables. To address these challenges, numerous new technologies will be needed involving energy efficiency, plug-in hybrids, smart grids with distributed generation, clean coal technologies, storage techniques and the ability to capture carbon.

With this goal in view, the Power & Energy Chapter of IEEE Calcutta Section is trying its best to provide a platform to share information so that the appropriate solutions can be more readily understood and adopted. In the various programs organized by our chapter, distinguished speakers provide an overview of challenges in India and give forward looking suggestions. This is the type of information and dialog that is targeted to be exchanged regularly through our chapter activities. Through such information exchange, higher reliability in power infrastructure along with eco-friendliness could be obtained which would lead to sustainable economic development.. The PE Chapter of IEEE Calcutta Section is lead by its Executive Committee. This leadership group is dynamic, flexible, hard working, and committed. I am proud to be a part of this PE chapter leadership team. I thank this leadership group along with numerous volunteers, whose untiring efforts have brought accolades to our chapter over the years. I also take this opportunity to express our sincere thanks to the sponsors, co-sponsors and advertisers, without whose support it would not have been possible to organize our programs in the way it is being done.

I convey our sincere thanks to innumerable power engineering professionals for their support and active participation. I am sure that their participation in our programs will be a rewarding experience. I would also like to invite power engineers to become members of IEEE and its Power & Energy Society, which I believe would be helpful for their professional growth. We look forward to get valuable feedback so that we can improve upon the quality of our chapter programs.

With fraternal greetings, Sivaji Chakravorti.
