Report on the Seminar on

'Relevance of Core Electrical Sciences in the Backdrop of Growing IT Industry'

    To discuss a major current issue concerning the students of electrical sciences as highlighted in the title of the seminar, this program was organized in which leading personalities from both core engineering industries as well as information technology sector were invited to express their views.

 

    The large number of participants were welcomed by Mr. Amitava Roy Choudhuri, Former Member(Technical), West Bengal State Electricity Board. The inaugural address was given by Prof. Debesh Das, Honb'le Minister in Charge, Department of Information Technology, Govt. of West Bengal. Prof. S.K.Sanyal, Chairman, IEEE Calcutta Section, deliberated on the objectives of the seminar. Vote of thanks was offered by Prof. P.K.Chattopadhyay, Head, Electrical Engineering Department of Jadavpur University, Kolkata.

 

    The seminar was divided into two technical sessions. Technical Session-I was chaired by Mr. Aloke Mookherjea, Former President, Bengal Chamber of Commerce and Industries. There were three speakers in this session, viz. i) Mr. Dipesh Guha, Executive Director, CESC Ltd, ii) Mr. Goutam Bhattacharya, Executive Director, Technology & Business Development, WEBEL and iii) Mr. Rabindranath Lahiri, Principal Consultant, Tata Consultancy Services.

 

    Mr. R. B. Putatunda, Former Director, Philips India Ltd, chaired the Technical Session-II. Mr. S. Kar, Director, SIEMENS Ltd, Dr. P. P. Das, Head of Engineering, Interra Systems and Mr. Rajarshi Chatterjee, Director Projects, Cognizant TS, were the speakers of the second session.

 

    The valedictory session was chaired by Prof. S.Chakravorti, former Chairman of Power Engineering Chapter of IEEE Calcutta Section, in which the deliberations of the seminar was summarized.

    On behalf of the organizers, mementoes were presented to both the speakers as well as the session chairman. There were altogether 140 participants in this seminar, out of which more than 100 were students from various engineering disciplines.
